The Obama administration is concerned that the federal government may be restricting Muslims’ right to contribute zakat (alms) as they are required to do.  Inquiring minds want to know—who are the recipients of this money?

As Jerry Gordon notes, quoting the Mission Islam website:

Zakat recipients would include the poor and needy, administrators of Zakat, debtors, converts to Islam, bondsmen, wayfarers and those fulfilling the “way of Allah”, Jihad. Note this comment:

By this is meant to finance a Jihad effort in the path of Allah, not for Jihad for other reasons. The fighter (Mujahid) will be given as salary what will be enough for him. If he needs to buy arms or some other supplies related to the war effort, Zakat money should be used provided the effort is to raise the banner of Islam.

We all have our dream press conference questions.  In light of his Cairo speech, I would love to hear President Obama’s opinions on the starred items.

This is more evidence for the notion that America, as it is presently constituted, and Islam, as it is presently constituted, cannot coexist.  One has to change.
