Why do Jews Vote for Democrats?
By Javier Manjarres | 07/14/09 | 12:39 AM EDT | 22 Comments
For years, we have tried to find reason (or reasons) for why the majority of American Jews vote for candidates of the Democratic Party, because it is important to understand the origin of these voting tendencies. Recently, a small contingent of Jews in the U.S., aided by many Christian supporters, have started to become outraged by the fact that too many American Jews have become too tolerant of the terrorism and violence that has afflicted the nation of Israel.
As we all know, Israel is a Jewish state. Like our country, Israel is a faith-based nation that was founded on the belief in one God. Since we practice essentially the same religion, we should assume the Jews that are here in the United States would be sympathetic with the cause of the Israeli people. Or should we? The key term in that sentence is Isr
aeli- American Jews are just that, American.
‘Developments in the Democratic Party bode ill for the Jewish people and for the state of Israel — home of up to 40% of the world's remaining Jewish population. The rank and file of the Party has become increasingly anti—Semitic and support for Israel has noticeably fallen. Democratic Congressmen have reflected this trend in very visible ways: their votes and actions in Congress reveal that support for Israel has eroded in alarming ways. Furthermore, more than a few Democratic Congressman have openly made statements that are either clearly anti—Semitic or can be fairly construed to be at least, 'anti—Semitic in effect, if not intent'.-American Thinker 06/21/06
There are many American Jews that are sympathetic and actually try to bring awareness to the struggles of the Israelis. These Israeli sympathizers tend to be selfless individuals who are concerned about the dangers posed by the nuclear ambitions of her neighbors.
Many Americans are confused because they feel that the Jews here in the states should be supportive of their
brethren in Israel. In fact, we all should all be supporting the Israelis in their struggles. What most of these frustrated individuals do not understand is that there is a fundamental difference between Israeli Jews and American Jews.
American Jews may simply feel the defense of Israel is not their fight. Another consideration is the fact that there are different sects within the Jewish faith here in the United States. Also, the majority of the Jews that migrated to the United States come from Central and Eastern Europe that were laborers that eventually started and/or joined labor unions here in the states.
After the Great Depression, Jewish laborers solidified their positions for worker protection and regulation. One other little tidbit is the fact that for the first part of the 20th century, the Christian elite and the GOP worked together to keep Jews out of banks, country clubs and other establishments-- not to mention the fact that the GOP has consistently opposed labor unions.
Democratic leaders for decades have championed the union cause, partially in order to garner the Jewish vote. Thus, many Jews feel a sense of loyalty and obligation to continue to vote for a party they have been part of for many generations now.
In today's world, however, this way of thinking is very hard to defend.
“…Judaism, like every great religion, is essentially conservative: Judaism demands obedience to a judging God and to a moral code set forth thousands of years ago. That is why the more orthodox a Jew is religiously, the less likely he is to be a liberal politically; and the more likely he is to vote Republican. Furthermore, the dominant Jewish issue, the security and survival of the Jewish state, is also unlikely to orient a Jew politically leftward. Even sociologically, Jews voting instinctively Democratic makes little sense. Jews, more than many, consider it shameful to rely on others for welfare, raise their children to believe in hard work, and benefit from a merit-based society. Indeed, even those Jews who vote Democratic usually lead rather conservative lives”. –Dennis Prager, Worldnetdaily.
I posed this question to Yomin Postelnik, a Republican candidate for Florida House of Representatives, District 91, a religious Jew and ordained rabbi. Yomin is also a conservative columnist. He told me that “most people of any creed or background have only a cursory understanding of the issues. Judaism stresses the need to be
compassionate and demands that human rights be held paramount in any society. All too many misunderstand those values to be found on the left. In reality nothing can be further from the truth, but those with only a superficial understanding of socioeconomics or who have been brainwashed by the intellectually bankrupt teachings of today’s Ivy League schools, don’t understand this. We need to educate people that time tested values are the most compassionate and do the greatest good. Simply put, we need to confront each liberal fallacy head on. Only then do we have a chance of turning Jewish liberals conservative.”
Perhaps if more American Jews listened the wise advice of Postelnik, far fewer American Jews would be suffering from buyer’s remorse of Obama-- and we wouldn’t be in the predicament that we now find ourselves in as a nation.

You hit the nail right on the head, again!
Very interesting!! I didnt see it that way.
It is easier to follow into the abyss when it is one of your own leading. Wexler brought to the Jews Obama and his racist, anti-semitic policies of no expansion in the settlements, Iran nuclear proliferation and indicating that Palestinians are the ones that are the victims in Israel. How could American Jews vote for someone who sat for over 20 years listening to anti-semitic rants? It is also Obama who gave Hamas over $800 million. Wexler was doing what was good for Wexler....not Jews. Wexler is a traitor to his district, his country and his people. To find out the truth, go to www.wexlersweb.com. This time, vote person......not party. www.electlynch.com
Even more of a reason to not vote Democrat! Unfortunately, it may take some horrific act of violence to wake these people up.
I have always wondered why so many Jews vote Democrat. Thank you for this article.
The GOP worked to keep Jews out of banks, country clubs and other establishments?
Unfortunately most Jews saw liberalism as believing in a fairness doctrine for the poor and oppressed. To be conservative was to be anti-minority. The newspapers never pointed out the statements by liberals that would have enraged Jews who in my opinion are strongly supportive of Israel. I fought hard against Obama as I knew that his voting was always pro-rogue states and anti-life. I was also uncomfortable with his personal friends and selection of church leadership. His total dedication to Acorn and similar organizations to obtain his goals whether leagally or not was another strike but my brethren were blind and still are just beginning to see the light as he takes one freedom away after another. Bush was so hated that his strong support for Israel, probably the staunchest of any president was overlooked.
The Jews elected an enemy of them and all capitalists.
This is truly eye opening! I have always wondered why the Jewish community voted the way that they did.
Thanks for the article. Great job!
ps. Maybe now they will start voting Republican? J.
Great article - But I would point out that if every Jew in the nation voted GOP, Obama still would have won. It would be great to have all Jews on board but the way to bring them over is true of any minority and really of any liberal. The GOP needs to start educating people, period.
This article makes several really good points. Here's another factor:
Many Jews and Latinos share a common malady that springs from media bias towards the Left, namely outright misrepresentation and stereotyping by the Media of Republicans as rich, old, white and typically Evangelical and unaccepting of minorities. It's up to us Republicans to do outreach and dispel these myths.
But the younger Jews who are fertile of mind might, which is why Republicans have to reintroduce why they are deserving of their vote.
Wow! Forget the article, you are a hottie!!!! I just saw your interview with that Marco Rubio guy, you two are really goodlooking latinos. Are you ever on FOX? You should be.
Single?
xoxo
can I email you?
Your boost to his ego is going to make our jobs around here a lot harder, Ali! One more outburst like that and we may have to ban you. :)
Javi, you need to stop talking about yourself like that! Hottie? Please....
Kid,
Very funny. You are right. Because I am sooooooooooo insecure, I have to make post comments like the one Ali made. Hahaha
Hey, I can't help the fact that I'm ugly as hell!!!
Javier, you did a great job explaining just about every point. Like Gary stated in his comment above, I also vigorously campaigned against Obama to my fellow Jews, and was pretty much ostracized. In fact, I think they wanted to ex-communicate me from the tribe. One Jewish lady originally from England just said to me, "Stephanie, it doesn't matter who is running. As Jews, we ALWAYS vote Democrat. Besides, Israel is not our problem - we are Americans." Another woman I'd known for almost 40 years thought I was joking when I mentioned the Republican Jewish Coalition. She couldn't believe anyone would use the words "Jewish" and "Republican" in the same sentence, much less that there was actually a group of them. She then promptly de-friended me on Facebook. How do you fight that kind of closed minded stubbornness?
Now, however, there are quite a few Jews who do have buyer's remorse. Unfortunately, it's too little, too late. And, as someone also stated in the comments above, even if every Jew in America had voted for McCain, it would not have been enough. My friends in Israel are stunned that American Jews were so blind and blindsided. Javier, you were totally correct that there is a huge difference between American and Israeli Jews. American Jews give lip service (and money) to Israel, but they are just so far removed from the fact that it is, or rather should be, the central part of their Judaism. Like many Americans, they do not have a reference point to understand what their ancestors sacrificed for freedom.
he silver lining on this cloud is that even Democrats are slowly starting to see there is a problem in Washington. Obama's approval rating was -8 as of this morning and are the lowest it's ever been. We really all need to work seriously on getting some real conservatives elected to Congress in 2010 and, hopefully, to the White House in 2012.
Thanks for letting me rant.
American Jews vote Democrat because they primarily reside on the eastern seaboard. They're leftist/socialist, just like the majority of their neighbors. There is no trade-off with regard to Israel policy if a democrat is elected instead of a republican. Devotion to Israel is central to both parties. There's a political charade going on between Obama and Netanyahu because the Israeli government swung right about the same time our government swung left. This is political posturing and nothing more. Israel will continue to build settlements and the US welfare check will continue to be delivered on time. Maybe devotion to our Constitution instead of to a foreign country would be wise?
Many in Israel are asking the same question. Why have Jews in America become so enamored with their lifestyle here and forgotten about their heritage. But we Americans have done the same. We have forgotten what our Fore Fathers fought and died for. Our Republic is in as great a danger as the state of Israel.
As Ronald Reagan said democracy just one generation away from extinction.
"We need to educate people that time tested values are the most compassionate and do the greatest good. Simply put, we need to confront each liberal fallacy head on. Only then do we have a chance of turning Jewish liberals conservative.” So true.. they do not see how the left's policies hurt the poor and embolden criminals.
In half a century of working in grass-root politics I'm among the ones who cannot for the life of me figure out why the Jewish voters continue to support Liberal Democrats. I feel a deep resentment of the Democrat attitude on Isreal, especially the Obama bunch. If I, as a Southern Baptist, can feel so strongly for Isreal and the rights of it's people, why in God's name can't the American Jews?
I can't understand why Jews in this country don't feel passionate about the Democrats lack of support of the homeland. They vote Democrat while the democrat party stabs their people in the back. I have worked in grass-root politics for 50 years and it makes no sense to me. I, as a Southern Baptist, feel more strongly aabout it than any of the Jews in my community that I know.
Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that most Republicans tried to keep America out of World War II and (in spite of recent revisionist history) Franklin D. Roosevelt led the fight to get us into the war. Besides contrary to the implications in your article, most Democrats (emphasis on the word most) don't want a weak America militarily, they just want us to be trying to develop multinational coalitioins to deal with overseas bad guys so that we don't take on the role of the World's police with all of the hatred that engenders.
and I always thought it was Jewish guilt that led Jews to be so misguided
