Is voter fraud a problem in this election?

Could be. Registration drive group ACORN submitted voter registrations in Nevada for the entire lineup of the Dallas Cowboys. While the Nevada Secretary of State flagged these registrations, Investors Business Daily has a chilling report on the voter registration problems all across the country. The Dallas Cowboy registrations were only part of the problem in Nevada, leading authorities to raid ACORN's Las Vegas offices.

And of course, here in Washington there is that problem of underage teens registering to vote before they're 18. (More on that story from NPR affiliate 88.5 KPLU.)

Why should anyone care? Because every invalid registration leads to a potential invalid vote, which cancels out a legal vote. Voter fraud is the ultimate disenfranchisement.

Seattle P-I: No more Bush-league judges

Last month the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran an op-ed piece from Seattle attorneys Leonard Feldman and Tom Burt. They say that when voters go to the polls in November, one of the most important issues will be the judges each candidate has pledged to nominate. But they have stern warnings about McCain's approach to judicial picks.

Does the Secretary of State have an obligation to prevent improper voter registrations? The Evergreen Freedom Foundation thinks so. The group has filed a complaint against Secretary of State Sam Reed in Thurston County Superior Court, alleging the Secretary is violating his obligation to prevent ineligible voters from registering. Researchers at EFF discovered that since 2000, more than 16,000 registrations from underage voters have been accepted.

During Seattle Visit, Czech Republic President Cites EU's Crippling Effect on Democracy

Wednesday night Václav Klaus, president of the Czech Republic, addressed 1,100 guests of Washington Policy Center at the organization's 2008 Annual Dinner in Seattle. His remarks are available online.

President Klaus received the 2008 Columbia Award "for his courage and dedication in leading the Czech people out of the shadow of communism and for creating a modern market economy based on respect for individual liberty, property rights and the environment. This has enabled the Czech Republic to become a respected member of the community of nations. President Klaus' example is an inspiration to people around the world who aspire to a life of freedom, democracy and economic opportunity."

President Klaus' talk centered on two vital and intertwined themes: How the European Union is weakening democracy and free enterprise in Europe, and how global warming alarmism is expanding government power.

His insight into the European Union is particularly important because the Czech Republic is slated to lead the EU in 2009.

"Entering the EU did not increase our freedom, or democracy, or our sovereignty. It brought us more of regulation and more of extensive government intervention."

"The EU's welfare system, the EU's protectionism, the EU's legal and regulatory burdens on business, the EU's quasi 'competition policy', the EU's pension and health care systems, the European Single Currency arrangements, etc. are very real. They result in the losing of democracy in favor of pan-European bureaucratic organizations located in Brussels that tend to restrain freedom, democracy and democratic accountability, not to speak about economic efficiency, entrepreneurship and competition."

President Klaus' final remark on the European Union is hard-hitting.

"The EU becomes the embodiment of postdemocracy, which is something the free people should never accept."

He cited another growing threat to democracy: the alarmist global warming ideology.

"I am frustrated that is has not been sufficiently challenged both inside and especially outside of climatology, he said. Many people have doubts about it but remain publicly more or less silent. We keep hearing one-sided propaganda regarding the greenhouse hypothesis, but do not hear serious counter-arguments."

President Klaus pointed out several factors in global warming alarmism that pose a threat to democracy:

1. The discussion of global warming and the process of dealing with it "is in the hands of a group of climatologists (and other related scientists) who are highly motivated to look in one direction only because a large number of academic careers has in the last couple of years evolved around the idea of man-made global warming."

2. It is "also in the hands of politicians who maximize the number of votes they seek to get from the electorate on the basis of whatever idea they could profit from. And the idea of man-made global warming is very seductive, politically promising and expedient."

3. As a consequence of political decisions, the process is controlled by "bureaucrats of national and more often of international institutions who try to maximize their budgets and years of careers regardless the costs, truth and rationality."

4. It is also greatly influenced by an industry spawned by global warming alarmism. This industry manipulates the policymaking process to obtain vast government subsidies and bolster its own interests.

The president also raised some important questions we ought to consider:

"Should a moderate temperature increase bother us more than many other pressing problems we face and should it receive our extraordinary attention at the expense of many competing problems? Are current attempts to mitigate global warming the best allocation of our scarce resources?...If we want to change the climate, can it be done? And what will be the consequences of such ambitions of ours?"

The solutions to challenges posed by climate change, Klaus argues, will come from creative market forces and not from government regulation.

"We know--with certainty--one thing. The consequences of climate changes--if there are any--will be solved, like any other changes and challenges in the past, by the market and human ingenuity, not by the government masterminding. They will be solved by technology, by growing wealth, by human adjustment, mobility and flexibility, not by government regulation and taxation."

Congress: Can You Spare a Dime?

There is a reason that Congress has a pathetic 10% approval rating, the lowest in history. The world bore witness to their embarrassing charade of scare tactics, rear-end covering and election year posturing last week. We've been scolded everyday for the past two weeks now that the end of the economy is near if we don't allow Congress to railroad through a $700 billion dollar "bail out" package to these lowest of all creatures, the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac parasites, complete with their multi-million dollar severance packages and stock options.

When Congress starts threatening me with Armageddon lest I consent to their spending spree, I am most certain that the money they want has nothing to do with "rescuing the economy," but everything to do with rescuing them from their own incompetence.

First of all let's put to rest this ridiculous sound bite that we're in the "worst economy since the depression." John Kerry tried that scare tactic in 2004. Walter Mondale used it in 1984. It wasn't true then and it's not true now. Not even close.

During the Great Depression, unemployment hit an all time high of 25%. During the 1930's, 9000 banks failed and the home foreclosure rate reached its worst point at just over 50%. Today, unemployment is at 6% and home foreclosures are at just over 2%.

Do you remember Black Monday, the famous stock market "crash" on October 19,1987? That was the biggest drop in stock market history since the Great Depression. The Market fell 508 points, from 2247 points to 1739, a 22.6% drop. Few people remember that 1987 ended in a positive, closing on December 31st at 1939 points (up 42 points for the year).

I remember well the fear that gripped everybody on Black Monday. What happened next? As I remember, life resumed as usual. Americans paid their mortgages, went to work and that year I remember having fun at a Halloween party. I don't recall children in tattered clothes selling apples on the street.

During the Savings and Loan scandal of the late eighties, 2700 banks failed. It's a good thing that they failed. The market worked, pruning out the bad apples and allowing good business practice to flourish again in the nineties. Bailing out corrupt institutions is the worst thing we can do to our economy.

The third scariest market "crash" happened after the September 11th attacks, when it fell 14%. Congress and the President steered our economy well through unprecedented challenges.

How we got to this present crisis is an example, par excellence, of how government corrupts good intentions. Look up "Community Reinvestment Act" and which congress members have been running that operation. In short, this Act required lending institutions to give loans to people who otherwise could not qualify, under the guise of providing "affordable housing." With our tax dollars providing the cover for these bad loans, institutions ran an orgy of predatory lending to people who otherwise could not qualify for loans. Interest only, sub-prime, no income verification, no down payment required type loans were handed out like crack cocaine to consumer addicts on the streets.

Executives for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac contributed fat sums of campaign cash to congressional leaders (Senator Obama received the second highest) in exchange for cover from regulatory oversight.

In 2003 President Bush and Senator McCain, along with four other Republican congressmen petitioned for regulatory reform over these institutions in a legislative bill called the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. Democrats blocked this bill. Google it for details. Then Google which legislators in the House and Senate have received the largest campaign contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. It's not even close.

Last Monday, September 29, when the world watched the bailout go down in flames, the market went down 777 points, or 7% of it's 11,000 points. The media (whose credibility is about as low as Congress') went into hyper drive warning the public that if we didn't give our representatives the go-ahead to pass this bailout, we were in for dire straits. The next day the market recovered over half of the 777 point loss. At this writing it is wobbling downward again.

As of today the Senate and the House has passed a revised version. The market does not like the news. Today's version was loaded with goodie-bag pork projects in an attempt to bribe more lawmakers (with our money) into passage. Of course none of these pet projects have anything to do with "rescuing" our economy.

People who want the bailout are people who benefited from the bubble; homeowners who want their equity back, builders and bankers. The bubble was a bubble, which means it was a mirage. Trying to blow more air into a popped bubble will not fix the economy. It will prop up the weakest banks that should fail, while weakening the strong, solvent institutions. It will protect the executives and politicians implicated in this scandal.

For certain we are headed for some tight economic times, but the American people are not rubes. We work hard, we are more generous than any other nation on this earth and that is well documented. But, we are sober, straight talking folk. Don't even try selling us magic beans.

It is an attempt to scare us into doling out more of our money to fund their incompetence and to distract us from their corruption.

This bailout is like the anesthesia in a life saving triple by-pass. If we just pump the patient with anesthesia, he will awaken from his fog to find his heart is still near failure...and in all probability in worse shape due to his malaise while under the anesthesia. Keep this in mind when they try to take control of your health care.

Palin vs. Biden

I know there's more detailed analysis out there. Orbusmax has a good roundup of the links. But here's my take on the Palin/Biden debate: No one watched the debate last night to see what Joe Biden had to say. And because Palin gave a strong, confident performance, she gave her ticket the more significant boost.
