The Dark Side of Government-run Health Care

Typically the premise behind government-run health care is compassion for those who would otherwise not have access to health care. The problem is that whenever the governmnet is involved in something, it becomes politicized. So when the government is in charge of health care, politicians and bureaucrats decide who gets treatment, what kind, and how much. Because governmnet spending is finite, policies are put in place to make those decisions. Just ask Dr. Berhnard Moeller about that.
Dr. Moeller left Germany and traveled to the other side of the world to fill a doctor shortage in rural Australia. He wanted to gain permanent residency for his family. The Australian government denied Dr. Moeller's request because his son has Down Syndrome and therefore "did not meet the health requirement." The government insisted:
"This is not discrimination. A disability in itself is not grounds for failing the health requirement -- it is a question of the cost implications to the community... If we did not have a health requirement, the costs to the community and health system would not be sustainable."
Lukas, the young boy with Down Syndrome, would cost too much to care for, so he can't become an Australian citizen even though his dad is working hard to deliver health care to rural populations.
That's the compassion of government-run health care.
