Barack Is No Martin Luther King

Posted by: Walter Backstrom | 08/29/2008 1:40 PM

I will assume I am probably one of the very few African Americans who was totally disappointed in Barack Obama's speech. I will tell you, I really wanted and sincerely hoped for much more, but there was nothing there and that's too bad. He is not the heir to Martin Luther King, not even close!!

The truly sad part is that he has tried to sell that image to the black community and they are going to buy it. Ultimately, he will be shown as just another corrupt politician and a gifted orator who was given these gifts by God and wasted them.

There is this old saying, "who you are speaks so loud I can barely hear what you say." This country needs help and we need someone who will not parse their words, not just use soaring rhetoric, but someone who will tell the American people the truth. That we are going to have to sacrifice, we really are our brothers keeper, that life is precious and that America, for all its faults, is still our home.

I realize John McCain has his faults, as we all do, but at least you get a sense of who he is and you know where he stands. However, with Barack, there is a nagging suspicion, begging the question, who is this guy really? The answer is, we still do not know and I am unwilling to go blindly down the path because the stakes are too high. It pains me to say that because I wanted him to succeed and I wanted him to be different. There will eventually be a president who is not a white male, but he for all his gifts, he is a pretender to the throne. Barack, you are no Martin Luther King.

Walter - I had the same feeling in the little bit of Obama's coronation speech that I watched. I wondered who Obama was trying to emulate with his style, and it is MLK.

Good Lord... all it took is a hockey mom from Alaska to crash the whole party.

Yes, Sarah did take the wind out of Obama's sails. Barack needs more experience and 180 degree change on all issues.

Ha ha, just came across this page (I live in the real Des Moines) and saw the comment from Goldwater GOP.

WOW! Funny! The real Goldwaters are supporting Obama! Too funny!
