The Everett-based USS Abraham Lincoln has been moved from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. Defense Secretary Robert Gates confirmed the move in a visit to Fort Lewis today. The primary reason for the shift is to shorten the flying time for the carrier's strike planes providing combat support in Afghanistan. Secretary Gates said that the decision to move the aircraft carrier was based on declining violence in Iraq and increasing insurgent attacks in Afghanistan. This was Robert Gates' first visit to Fort Lewis. He also spent time at McChord and met with soldiers and patients at Madigan Medical Center. Full story here.
