Dino Rossi received a warm welcome and standing ovation from the American Legion at their state convention today in Vancouver. In the fifteen minute speech Rossi thanked veterans for their service and assured them that veterans issues are a high priority for him and that as Governor, he will ensure that our returning vets are honored appropriately.
Rossi reflected on his experience during the first Gulf War when protesters in Seattle gathered for public flag burning demonstrations. "I just wasn't raised that way," Rossi said. So, he began to organize an effort of his own, to counter the protesters, which resulted in a 3000 person march in downtown with marchers singing "God Bless America."
To his disbelief, Rossi said that one of the peace protesters actually called their display "a dirty trick!"
"So marching while singing 'God Bless America' is considered a 'dirty trick!' What are we to make of that?'" Rossi asked the over 300 people in attendance.
"As you know I am running for governor and most of you have probably heard a lot of noise going on with the governor's race, but I'm not here to talk politics. I'm here to say thank you for your service." He then offered his own vision for the state that includes no state income tax, a state that is more business friendly and one that is tougher on crime.
After attendees gave him a standing ovation, several were eager to follow Dino outside and get their picture made with him and shake his hand. I am certain I heard at least a few Legionnaires mutter "Let's re-elect this guy!"

I'll bet it was a great speech and a great time. Wish I could have been there. Let me know about any upcoming events in the next few weeks as I will be back from Iraq for a few weeks vacation. Great job on the Vets for Dino page.
