BIOGRAPHY

Matt Mitchell was born on 20 May 1988 in Sarasota, Florida. A first-generation Floridian, his parents sent him through Catholic school in Venice, where he would be picked up each day just in time to catch the last few minutes of Rush Limbaugh on the radio five days a week. He would become the first of four current or soon-to-be Republican super voters raised by his parents, who are eagerly anticipating thank you checks from the RNC for their handiwork. Matt was a scholar-athlete in high school, doubling as a cross country and track runner, and was accepted at the University of Florida in 2006. He graduated in August 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science.

While at UF, Matt was a member of the College Republicans at the University of Florida, and helped found a conservative student news magazine called The Florida Frontier. After serving as Managing Editor for a year, Matt spent most of 2008 back in Sarasota serving as a full-time staffer for Congressman Vern Buchanan’s re-election campaign, helping the freshman Republican turn a 369 vote win in 2006 into a 55,000 vote rout in ’08. While campaigning, Matt befriended Sarasota RedCounty editor Rich Swier, who recommended giving RC a shot as a Diarist, and is now heading up RedCounty’s Alachua County edition.

Matt is currently single and lives in Gainesville, Florida.

Iran: Chicago's newest role model.

By Matt Mitchell | 06/18/09

A deliberately obnoxious and bomb-throwing title? Hell yes. Totally out of character for a mild-mannered guy like me (not to mention a huge fan of Chicago and everything in it)? Most definitely. But as the popular song goes, it's like I kissed a girl....and I liked it. But Meckenesque legerdemain aside, while allegations of voter fraud and results tampering have not been officially verified by Iran's electoral authorities (and depending on how... read more »

Cretul for Congress?

By Matt Mitchell | 06/17/09

Whoever said politics was the art of the possible hit the nail on the head. Florida House Speaker Larry Cretul (R-Ocala), currently representing portions of Marion, Levy and Alachua Counties, has become the subject of some fresh rumors that he may be gearing up for a run for Congress against Democratic Representative Alan Grayson of Orlando. Grayson, who unseated Republican Congressman Ric Keller in 2008 on the strength of Barack Obama's strong... read more »

The queer question.

By Matt Mitchell | 06/13/09

Note: This article should not be taken as a mean-spirited or critical response to Dr. Swier's most recent article on the Obama Administration's relationship with the LGBT rights lobby. Rather, the author writes this in an effort to continue a discussion here on RedCounty Florida started by Dr. Swier on the impact of said lobby's activism in the education system and how the Republican Party must respond to such lobbying in order to enhance its... read more »

Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Go.

By Matt Mitchell | 06/11/09

Born down in a dead man's town/ the first kick I took was when I hit the ground/ End up like a dog that's been beat too much/ till you spend half your life just coverin' up You might call them the Hoovervilles of the 21st century. An even more cynical observer could call them an Ozymandian monument to American excess. Whatever you want to call them, tent cities are everywhere. I don't have to tell the Californians on RedCounty about them,... read more »

The Sheriff cuts his own path.

By Matt Mitchell | 06/11/09

In a surprise that appears to have not gone unnoticed at 700 N Adams St in Tallahassee, State Senator Steve Oelrich (R-Cross Creek), former longtime Sheriff of Alachua County and seeking re-election to his 14th Senate District seat in 2010, endorsed Marco Rubio over Charlie Crist in the Republican primary contest for the US Senate. Senator Oelrich also broke with the Governor's decision to push increased funding for the moribund SunRail... read more »
