BIOGRAPHY

Matt Mitchell was born on 20 May 1988 in Sarasota, Florida. A first-generation Floridian, his parents sent him through Catholic school in Venice, where he would be picked up each day just in time to catch the last few minutes of Rush Limbaugh on the radio five days a week. He would become the first of four current or soon-to-be Republican super voters raised by his parents, who are eagerly anticipating thank you checks from the RNC for their handiwork. Matt was a scholar-athlete in high school, doubling as a cross country and track runner, and was accepted at the University of Florida in 2006. He graduated in August 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science.

While at UF, Matt was a member of the College Republicans at the University of Florida, and helped found a conservative student news magazine called The Florida Frontier. After serving as Managing Editor for a year, Matt spent most of 2008 back in Sarasota serving as a full-time staffer for Congressman Vern Buchanan’s re-election campaign, helping the freshman Republican turn a 369 vote win in 2006 into a 55,000 vote rout in ’08. While campaigning, Matt befriended Sarasota RedCounty editor Rich Swier, who recommended giving RC a shot as a Diarist, and is now heading up RedCounty’s Alachua County edition.

Matt is currently single and lives in Gainesville, Florida.

Recession: The human cost.

By Matt Mitchell | 07/18/09

I don't imagine South Park is the most popular television program among RedCounty readers. But every now and again it comes up with some powerful insights about the state of our economy. An episode from the show's 7th season has found a particularly emotionally gripping analogue in the battle for the New Jersey Governorship. The episode, titled "Christian Rock Hard", details the manipulative Eric Cartman's efforts to make... read more »

Palin: What's in it for Greer?

By Matt Mitchell | 07/05/09

Sarah Palin knows how to own a news cycle, that's for damn sure. Likely stealing at least a little of the thunder from the TEA Party movement that would love to have her as their national leader, Palin announced in a bizarre press conference that she would be resigning as Alaska Governor at the end of the month. Palin offered no useful explanation for her actions besides a bunch of convoluted metaphors about basketball and dead fish, allowing... read more »

Q2 predictions!

By Matt Mitchell | 07/01/09

Well, the game that voters don't care about but strategists obsess over (mainly because it impacts their own bottom line), but means quite a bit in the grand scheme of campaigns is on. Just how much have the top-tier candidates for the highest-profile seats raised over the past three months? The day after each reporting period ends, I'll offer some predictions based on the sundry sinister scuttlebutt and public expectations raising for the... read more »

The campaigning non-candidate

By Matt Mitchell | 06/30/09

She's been a State Senator for ten years, but I had never heard of Paula Dockery until about two days after Bill McCollum had announced his gubernatorial campaign. Frankly, her name recognition outside of Polk County is probably higher among news reporters than Republican voters. But for whatever reason, a small but noticeable segment of the state GOP grassroots is tossing her name around, and Senator Dockery has validated their grumblings with... read more »

Inconvenient Truths About the Infamous Eight

By Matt Mitchell | 06/27/09

Well, the ugly cap and tax bill narrowly passed the House yesterday. And perhaps most aggravating of all is the fact that if two more Republicans showed up to vote NO (one of those being fiscal conservative darling Jeff Flake of Arizona) and just three of the eight GOP members who vote AYE changed their minds, then it would have been DOA. As irksome as this fact rightfully is to many conservatives, including many readers in this space, I... read more »

No teleprompter? No problem!

By Matt Mitchell | 06/23/09

There are just and sensible reasons for the Obama Adminstration to have remained as quiet as they have up to this point. On substance, I would even agree that their hands-off policy towards the Iranian elections is worth giving a shot, and could very well have proven a successful way of engaging this situation in a constructive manner. But for all the foreign policy demonstrated in the formulation of the Obama plan for Iran, the execution of it... read more »

The whole world is watching.

By Matt Mitchell | 06/20/09

WARNING: Extremely graphic video footage is linked at the conclusion of this post. Do not view this video footage with children present or if of the faint of heart. As the demonstrators in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention first cried as Boss Daley's Finest battered fellow convention protestors into paddywagons, so have the student revolutionaries in Teheran cried out to President Ahmadinejad and the Guardian Council today. As... read more »
