Remembering Governor Guy Hunt (1933-2009)

By Matt Chancey | 02/09/09

I remember how exited I was to be selected as a page for the Alabama Senate. It was April of 1993, and I recall driving up to Montgomery with my best friend growing up, Matt Hartfield. We were both 16 years old, and it was our first road trip on our own. I remember we stayed at a hotel that later became the Riverwalk Stadium where the Montgomery Biscuits minor league team presently resides. Governor Guy Hunt I was very active in local politics... read more »

Fair-Weather Conservatives

By Matt Chancey | 02/01/09

A recent AP story caught my attention: "GOP governors press Congress to pass stimulus bill." After caving last year to a $700 billion bailout, the Republicans in Congress appear to be standing firm against Barack Obama's call to flush another $800 billion down the tubes. By the way, this is one advantage to having Democrat control in Washington-- Republicans will vote against many things they would normally support just because Democrats are... read more »

Obama: Human Rights for Terrorists... not Babies

By Matt Chancey | 01/25/09

President Obama signed two notable executive orders during the first days of his administration. One rescinded the "Mexico City Policy" that President Reagan initiated, prohibiting taxpayer money from being used to fund abortions overseas. The second ordered the closing of Guantanamo's infamous prison, where hundreds of terrorist suspects have been detained for years and, in many cases, tortured to try to extract information from them. President... read more »

Winning the Youth Vote Through REAL Compassionate Conservatism

By Matt Chancey | 01/08/09

It has been observed that the up-and-coming generation of young people are more socially conscious than their spoiled Baby Boomer parents and their SUV-driving, yuppified older siblings. This new generation is keyed into world affairs and world suffering and is doing something about it. They march against the War in Darfur; they do fund drives for AIDS Orphans; and they largely vote for candidates who pledge to recruit the government (i.e. the... read more »

Swimming in Money... Somehow, We Don't Seem to be any Richer

By Matt Chancey | 01/08/09

The Congressional Budget Office is reporting that the projected federal budget deficit for 2009 will be a record $1.2 trillion dollars. And this figure does not factor in the $770 billion Obama bailout package, which I prefer calling the "Bailout of the Bailout."Remember a few months ago when we were sold a cheap (er, uh, I mean expensive) bill of goods in the first bailout? President Bush and Congress said the sky would fall if... read more »

Why Money Matters in Judicial Races

By Matt Chancey | 01/05/09

I recently read that a bill has been introduced by Representative Chris England (D-Tuscaloosa) to limit spending in Alabama judicial races. Granted, the amount of money spent on judicial campaigns in Alabama increases every year to more outrageous levels. But I believe placing spending limits on these races fails to address the real reasons behind the big spending and also violates the free speech and property rights of Alabamians. On the latter... read more »
