Opening my mailbox yesterday, I found a couple of oversized postcards praising Rep. Frank Kratovil and Senator Barbara Mikulski for voting in favor of expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). SCHIP is government health care for the poor and not-so-poor (and sometimes the almost-rich, depending on your state). Straddling the Fence

In his excellent analysis for this blog, Mike Swartz looks at how freshman Congressman Frank Kratovil (D-MD) is doing in his first month on the job. Kratovil, elected as a Democrat from a normally Republican district, is hewing a fairly moderate line so far. "Buy American" is Bad Policy

It looks like the bad stimulus bill has gotten even worse. The House of Representatives not only voted yesterday to waste $819 billion, it also approved a "Buy American" amendment that will further slow economic growth. While the "Buy American" sentiment may sound good and play well to those who get their economics lessons from Lou Dobbs, in reality this type of protectionism is the last thing our economy needs.
