Bob Vander Plaats on Gov. Culver: "Hope and Wait" Policies

By Albert Bregar | 07/20/09

The primary that will decide the Republican nominee to challenge Governor Chet Culver is still eleven months away. That didn’t stop The Iowa Republican from commissioning a poll to determine who the frontrunner is at this early date. As I had predicted last month Bob Vander Plaats is the clear frontrunner in the race for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination. In fact Vander Plaats is clearly dominating the rest of the field by... read more »

The Continuing Saga of Sonia Sotomayor

By Albert Bregar | 07/15/09

Finally after what has seemed like ages I am finally able to get back online to opine about the comings and goings of the political world. I won’t bore you with the trials and tribulations of the last two weeks of my cyber absence and instead dive right into the meat of why you come here. Today I will opine on the battle in the U.S. Senate regarding the confirmation hearing of President Obama’s pick to replace Justice David Souter on... read more »

Celebrating Independence Day

By Albert Bregar | 07/04/09

Independence Day   On this day we pause to celebrate our nation’s independence from tyranny and oppression. Some 233 years ago a brave and courageous people stood up and declared they were taking back their God given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These men not only forged the greatest nation man has ever seen, but too, they believed We the People was the best course shape their world, and it still... read more »

Iowa Gubernatorial Candidates Have Plenty of Challenges to Overcome

By Albert Bregar | 07/02/09

Now that the race for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination if finally beginning to heat up I decided that I was going to do a quick comparison of the announced candidates. As it stands right now we have three officially announced candidates for the office with a fourth supposedly close to announcing his candidacy. Because we only know the intentions of the three that have entered the race they will be the only ones included in this... read more »

Democrats Betray Public Trust

By Albert Bregar | 07/01/09

When the public elects an individual to serve as their representative in the government they have some expectations of those officials act. With few exceptions we expect our elected officials to serve us with honor, dignity, honesty, and wisely. There are times however when our elected officials fail to live up to those expectations. For the most part we forgive them their inadequacies; after all they are just human beings. However there comes... read more »

Pelosi's Iowa Puppets Should Resign

By Albert Bregar | 06/27/09

As I was sitting here this evening contemplating the passage of the Waxman-Markey Cap and Trade bill yesterday evening I continued to get more and more irate. Sure I have been opposed to any form of cap and trade legislation because I firmly understand that it is a job killer, an economy killer. I understand that it is nothing more than a massive tax on all Americans. I understand that it does have good intentions, however I remain unconvinced... read more »

I-Jobs Board Ignores Infrastucture Needs

By Albert Bregar | 06/26/09

Wednesday the I-Jobs board selected the first applicants to be awarded money from Governor Chet Culvers bonding plan. All of the projects approved are located in the city of Cedar Rapids, a city still recovering from the record breaking and devastating floods that decimated the city last year. For the most part the projects awarded the funds can be considered vital infrastructure needs. Here is the list of projects with the amount... read more »

Romeny Slams Obama on Iran

By Albert Bregar | 06/25/09

Those of you that know me know that I am not a fan of Mitt Romney. I don’t want to rehash the most recent Iowa Caucus, but my dislike of Romney stems from some of his actions as Governor of Massachusetts. But that is neither here nor there. Yesterday morning Romney was interviewed by Harry Smith on CBS’ The Early Show. But after viewing the interview that CBS did not get what it wanted. Clearly the network wanted an interview... read more »

Senator McKinley Reflects on Iowa Budget and Future Deficits

By Albert Bregar | 06/25/09

Next Wednesday is not only a day to flip the calendar and start a new month – it is also the day when the new laws passed during this year’s legislative session go into effect. Though many of the new changes to Iowa’s code will not generate a lot of attention, one outcome of the 2009 legislation session – the state’s new budget – will likely dominate discussions in Iowa for the next year.   Ever... read more »

At What Point by Tom Shaw

By Albert Bregar | 06/24/09

During my twenty years of service in the U.S. Navy I lived in and visited many foreign nations. I was stationed in the Philippines during the “People’s Power” revolution and participated in a historic port visit to Shanghai, China in May, 1989, during which the Chinese took to the streets to protest the communist regime (remember Tieniman Square?). In both cases, I always wondered, at what point did the people... read more »
