Georgia Today

Georiga News Keeping with a recent theme of education, not all is bad in Georgia. Two Georgia universities made Kiplinger's magazine's 2009 "100 Best Values in Public Colleges." The University of Georgia ranked fourth and Georgia Tech was ranked at 16th in the annual survey. Atlanta City Council President Lisa Borders home was robbed. The AJC pointed out that "Property crime increased in Atlanta by 15 percent between 2005 and 2007, police... read more »

Are Gwinnett County Schools the future of Georgia schools?
By George Dienhart | 01/08/09
No, not really. I am passionate about the quality of Georgia Public Schools, and I can honestly say that I am not for, or against, the Gwinnett County School Plan. That is because there is almost no detail to what Gwinnett County is going to do. The Gwinnett County School system won approval as the first school district in Georgia to be freed from some state education laws. This effort purports to try new methods to improve student... read more »

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich Arrested
By George Dienhart | 12/09/08
Though I now live in Georgia, I spent most of my non-Marine Corps life in Illinois. Some of you may have noticed Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was in the news this morning. He was arrested on corruption charges this morning. For those keeping track- that's 2 Illinois governors in a row to be arrested on corruption charges. It's also 3 governors out of the last six to be charges. Unfortunately, it just another day in Illinois politics...I was... read more »

Obama Honeymoon Already Over. Far Left Files for Divorce.
By George Dienhart | 12/08/08
It was a hard act to follow up. In a campaign where he promised the world everything- Obama has discovered that the radical left is already complaining. It reminds of when a co-worker once told me "Bill Clinton might have well been a Republican". Aside from showing that this person was about as far left as one can lean, it also showed why the Democrats always self-destruct after a victory. As conservatives, it is sometimes hard to understand the... read more »

But is she smarter than a fifth grader...
By George Dienhart | 11/24/08
As I've stated before- I calls 'em as I sees 'em. Normally, I don't break bad on fellow Republicans. There's plenty of other things for me to write aboutThis, however, is a story that needs to be analyzed. I remember when I first moved to Georgia. The principle of one of my kids school positively beamed when she stated that Kathy Cox's kid's once went there. Maybe they still do- I really didn't care. I was sitting in the principles office not... read more »

One Man, One Bomb, One Disaster
By George Dienhart | 11/20/08
It is believed that Iran now has enough fissile material for one bomb. One bomb is one bomb too many. Ask any citizen of Tel Aviv. One bomb is hundreds of thousands of dead men, women and children. One bomb plus one madman can equal a world forever changed. The question that is currently being asked is, "Is it too late?" Often we are told we can't put the genie back in the bottle. That statement may be true, but you can blow the bottle of the... read more »

A federal bailout for the city of Atlanta?
By George Dienhart | 11/13/08
Incredibly, Mayor Shirley Franklin floated the idea of a bailout. It makes sense. In Obama's socialist wonderland, mismanaged banks get bailouts. Mismanaged car companies will soon receive bailouts. Why not mismanaged cities? As Atlanta grows up, and becomes a "big city", we should compare some things. There are currently 34 cities that are larger than Atlanta in the United States. NONE of them have asked for a Federal bailout. Being a... read more »

Happy (belated) Birthday, Marines
By George Dienhart | 11/11/08
233 and counting by George Dienhart It happened in Philadelphia, on 10 November 1775. Novembers in Philadelphia can be harsh, and I imagine this one was no different. As the cold autumn breeze swept through a future nations defacto capital, the Continental Congress authorized the funding for two battalions of Marines. Marines celebrated, as they still do today, at a tavern. The first Commandant of the Marine Corps, Captain Samuel... read more »
