Eric Cantor: Can He Rally the Troops Against Obama Budget?
By George Dienhart | 04/02/09
Why "Cantor Watch?" Because the young Virginian is supposed to be the future of our party… Congressman Eric Canter on CNBC's Squawk Box this morning, discussing the GOP alternative budget proposal: "These two budgets– the Majority budget and then now our alternative – represent two very different visions for where this country needs to go. It's actually a very timely occasion for us to put both of... read more »
Cantor Watch: Robo Calls and Bills of Attainder
By George Dienhart | 03/30/09
Why “Cantor Watch?” Because the young Virginian is supposed to be the future of our party… Enough has been written about the hideous, anti-philosophical AIG bonus tax which the House passed last week that there’s no point in re-hashing the arguments against it here. What has gone under-reported, however, is the fact that Minority Whip Eric Cantor voted for the tax—which is why we call the issue back to mind here... read more »

RETRACTION: Taxes
By George Dienhart | 03/05/09
Earlier today, I mistakenly posted a piece on taxes and Georgia state legislators. I misread the original piece that I had linked to, and apologize to all involved for any confusion. The list I published are legislators that have paid their taxes on time. They should be applauded in light of the actions of some of their peers. read more »

Taxes? We don't pay no stinking taxes!
By George Dienhart | 03/05/09
Macon.com has dug up some dirt on 10% of our state legislaters. It seems that they don't believe that they need to pay their taxes. The list includes the following "public servants". There are more names forthcomming. Senators: Cecil Staton, R-Macon, Ross Tolleson, R-Perry, Seth Harp, R-Midland, Johnny Grant, R-Milledgeville, State Reps: Allen Peake, R-Macon, Nikki Randall, D-Macon, David Lucas, D-Macon, Bubber Epps, D-Jeffersonville,... read more »

A tale of two hospitals (and the American healthcare system).
By George Dienhart | 03/04/09
Over the weekend we had a medical emergency. Without getting into to much detail, my oldest daughter was hospitalized, and then transferred to a second medical facility. The story I am about to tell isn't so much about my daughter as it is about the treatment she received at Piedmont Fayette Hospital and Children's Hospital of Atlanta- Scottish Rite. It also illustrates what works and what doesn't work in our healthcare system. We noticed... read more »

Sound Public Policy is a Solid Foundation in Georgia
By George Dienhart | 02/27/09
By Benita M. Dodd February 26 was Georgia Chamber Day at the state Capitol, one of those rare occasions when actual businesspeople represented in the state and local chambers of commerce take time out of their busy work day to step onto lawmakers' turf. Usually, they have a living to earn, so it's left to lobbyists and other special interests to duke it out over proposals in the public arena of the legislative session. As federal... read more »

John Oxendine responds
By George Dienhart | 02/11/09
Earlier, we took state Insurance Commissioner (and Gubernatorial Candidate) John Oxendine to task over his seemingly disparate views on Sunday alcohol sales. Commissioner Oxendine was kind enough to send a response to my concerns. George, Thanks for the opportunity to write for your blog. Alcohol sales is one of those social issues that often divides Georgians, even within the Republican Party. But it doesn't have to. I believe my stances on... read more »
