State of the State

By Matt Hurley | 01/28/09

In the Great State of Ohio, Governor "T-Shirt" Ted Strickland braved the snow and made it from the mansion over to the Statehouse in order to bloviate a bit on the State of the State.  You can get the transcript of the speech here. Reactions from Ohio's conservatives has been quick and sharp.  In a release published at Weapons of Mass Discussion, the Republican that is presumed to take on Strickland in 2010... read more »

Voinovich to Announce Retirement Tomorrow

By Matt Hurley | 01/11/09

Speculation here and elsewhere regarding the political future of the Great State of Ohio's senior senator, George Voinovich, is expected to come to an end tomorrow when he announces that he will not seek a third term. Politico is reporting that Voinovich will make the call tomorrow.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer is still playing the story a little coyly.   Voinovich has had a stellar electoral record having lost only twice in his... read more »

Boehner, Chip, Bailouts, and "Economic Stimulus"

By Matt Hurley | 01/10/09

Round Two: "Economic Stimulus" Chip has done it again.  He might have a point this time, but I wish he had chosen his words a little more carefully so we would know for sure what his beef is... The latest from my good friend Chip Hanlon over at greenfaucet.com deals with Republican Leader, my Congressman and a Great American -- John Boehner -- and his will to oppose President-Elect Obama's "economic stimulus" plan. Problem is, Boehner... read more »

Gov. Strickland is Open to Gambling in Ohio

By Matt Hurley | 01/10/09

MSNBC / NBC4 is reporting what some of us knew about Gov. Ted Strickland long before the Keno thing: Strickland is willing to allow gambling in the state of Ohio contrary to his position taken during the campaign. Ted Strickland wants what every governor in a term-limited state wants: a second term. He realizes that he has to actually live up to his promise to Turn Around Ohio and so far the track record isn't looking to good. So, he's... read more »

Boehner Wasn't Outmaneuvered on Earmarks

By Matt Hurley | 01/08/09

I am bound to stir some controversy amongst our friends in the RedCounty.com community, but I absolutely have to refute this ridiculous "brainfart piece" written by my good friend Chip Hanlon over at greenfaucet.com.Chip, I hate to be the bearer of bad news for you, but Barack Obama isn't going to be your savior either. Obama has no ability to end earmarks. The legislative branch is the one that controls earmarks, not the executive. If Obama... read more »

Senator Voinovich Update

By Matt Hurley | 01/07/09

The 111th Congress convened yesterday and Ohio's senior senator, George V. Voinovich, was a busy man. As mentioned in yesterday's WMD Blast, Senator Voinovich co-sponsored the reintroduced Broadcaster Freedom Act which is designed to prohibit the return of the Fairness Doctrine (whatever that is...). If you didn't "get" the joke in the opening paragraph, read this and this... Voinovich Voices Strong Support for Israel:WASHINGTON, D.C. -... read more »

Butler County Site Update

By Matt Hurley | 01/06/09

A few site maintenance issues that I would ask Butler County readers to assist with if you would be so kind... Regarding Comments: A couple of months ago, we implemented a new comments system -- on a trial-basis -- called Intense Debate. Now that we've been test driving it for a few weeks, we're mulling whether to keep it our return to the default comments system. Since you, the readers, are the users of our comments section, we're keenly... read more »
