The Berlin Wall

By Ernest Werlin | 10/31/09

“Berlin is the key to Germany. Germany is the key to Europe.” - Joseph Stalin Nearly two decades since its demise, the Berlin Wall has largely faded from our thoughts. But Frederick Taylor's latest book revives memories of a time when it seemed the Wall would never fall. Taylor provided a wonderful overview of the role of Germany in the modern world. At the epicenter of Germany was Berlin. Taylor sets the scene with an invigorating... read more »

BOOK REVIEW: A Safe Haven

By Ernest Werlin | 08/04/09

Harry S. Truman and The Founding of Israel by Allis Radosh and Ronald Radosh   Dusk Jacket “Even thought I knew how the story would end, A Safe Haven still had me sitting on the edge of my seat, watching Harry Truman weigh the arguments of his friends and advisers in the months, then weeks, then days lead up to his recognition of Israel.” Cokie Roberts I think Ms. Roberts’s summation of the drama surrounding... read more »

By Ernest Werlin | 05/24/09

The Court-Packing Fight and the Triumph of Democracy: FDR v. the Constitution by Burt Solomon “The Success of Democratic institutions lies in the success of the processes of reason as opposed to tyranny of force, between these, society must choose. If society chooses the process of reason, it must maintain the institutions which embody those processes.” - Chief Justice Evan Hughes speech before American Law Institute in 1937 in... read more »

How Lehman Got Its Real Estate Fix

By Ernest Werlin | 05/03/09

The New York Times Article “How Lehman Got Its Real Estate Fix” provides a very incisive picture of the behavioral pattern that led to Lehman Brothers’ demise. The article focused on the former head of its global real estate group, Mark Walsh. Richard Fuld, the CEO of Lehman Brothers, aided and abetted Walsh. Together they created a machine that ended up devouring its master. The Greek myth about Icarus captured the essential... read more »

Chrysler Bankruptcy

By Ernest Werlin | 05/01/09

I would like to share some thoughts about the likelihood of impartiality in resolving conflicting claims in the Chrysler Bankruptcy. There has been significant attention surrounding the Chrysler bankruptcy. The prevailing wisdom is that the process will be fair and that competing claims will be equitably resolved in some sixty days. This assertion is just a meaningless abstraction. That is, judges in bankruptcy cases have almost absolute power... read more »

The Tragedy of the New York Pension Scandal

By Ernest Werlin | 04/23/09

Over the past few weeks, news reports highlight a growing scandal involving billions of dollars of New York State Pension funds. Moreover, similar misdeeds have occurred in other states such as New Mexico. New York State recently announced that on a going forward basis no money manager can pay a finders’ fee. Frankly, the “pay to play” policy (in reality a “bribe to play”) was harmful to the public. That is, given... read more »

Understanding Toxic Assets

By Ernest Werlin | 04/05/09

Over the past eighteen months, the term toxic assets have been inserted with regularity into discussions of our financial plight. Nevertheless, the usage of the term has not led to a meaningful analysis of the precise nature of these financial securities. Thus, I fear we are being distracted by a sense of envelopment from the unknown. Pundits decry $ trillions of dollars committed to bogus investments without articulating their nature. In... read more »

Social Unrest

By Ernest Werlin | 03/29/09

In an editorial from the New York Times, “Feeling Too Down to Rise Up” by Sudhir Venkatesh, the author pointed out a dichotomy. That is, the American people are very frustrated and angry; however, to date they have not taken their unhappiness to the streets. Venkatesh indicated that even during the Great Depression, when almost 25% of Americans were unemployed, we remained a passive nation. Have we become numb because our... read more »

American Express CEO Got $36.3 Million

By Ernest Werlin | 03/11/09

I (hopefully shared by the nation) am in a complete state of shock about the egregious compensation to Kenneth Chenault, the CEO of American Express.  The Wall Street Journal reported today that Chenault earned salary, perks, and stock-based awards worth $36.3 million. The company's stock closed last Friday at $12.17, a twelve year low. In large part the stock's poor performance reflects poorly implemented expansion by American Express... read more »

Battle of Britain

By Ernest Werlin | 03/08/09

Michael Korda's book, With Wings Like Eagles, relives all the exhilaration, heroism, fear, and epochal significance of the Battle of Britain. 70 years later the battle retains its deserved luster. Winston Churchill, Britain's Prime Minister, understood that the Battle of Britain offered the same timeless message as the Hebrews deliverance in the Book of Exodus. As long as man appreciates the merits of civilization and freedom these stories... read more »
