COMMENTARIES
It takes a family not a village
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
We read with sadness the Sarasota Herald-Tribune editorial, "Building a better Newtown".All communities in America have an area where crime is high, drug abuse is rampant, neighborhoods are in decline and families are broken. When residents of these neighborhoods get together to find solutions to these problems that is a good thing. When their solutions are doing more of the same and expecting different results that is called insanity by... read more »

Mr. Ten Percent elected as Pakistan's President by Peter Rice
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
This article is in response to the Washington Post editorial, "Pakistan and the next Sept. 11". With Mr. "Ten Percent" as the next president of Pakistan and the leaders of the two largest political parties each being worst than the other (or some similar words), the only hope for Pakistan continues to be the Pakistani Army, as it has been for all but the first few years of the existence of Pakistan (since 8/15/1947). Al Qaeda is holed up... read more »

The wrong way to fight radical Islam
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
English translation - "No Surrender"The Sarasota Herald-Tribune has an article titled, "Wrong way on terrorism". This article discusses a recent Rand Corporation report that says, "the government should reconsider the use of the term 'war on terror."I fully agree with the Rand Corporation. I disagree with the rational in the column as to why we need to use different terms to describe the global war the United States and our allies are... read more »

The short sightedness of the no-drilling Democrats
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune in their editorial, "Polls and energy policy" just don't get it.The basis of their argument is false. Republicans have always wanted to use all our own natural resources and stop our "addiction" to foreign oil as President Bush pointed out in his State of the Union address in 2004. It is Democrats that are caving under the pressure of the "polls" not Republicans. With the cost of gasoline and energy rising... read more »

Obama's Islamist Problem by Frank Gaffney
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
Democratic presidential candidate Barak Obama's appearance before a large evangelical congregation in Orange County over the weekend underscored an evident imperative of his campaign: Emphasize his Christian faith and put to rest insistent rumors that he secretly adheres to the Islamic creed of his father and youth. The effort to minimize any grounds for fearing Obama has an abiding, if covert, attachment to Islam has prompted him to risk... read more »

JunkScience.com -- Steven Milloy, Publisher
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
"Get this one," says billionaire T. Boone Pickens in his latest TV ad, "Iran is changing its cars to natural gas and we're not doing a thing here. They're doing this to use less oil and sell it for $120 a barrel. We can switch our cars to natural gas and stop sending our dollars to foreign countries." Readers of this column know better than to take at face value the marketing of the so-called "Pickens Plan." So what's the full story behind... read more »

Nuclear Energy: One Solution to our Energy Independence
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune editorial board takes on nuclear power in their column, "The trouble with nuclear power: Plants are generally safe, but high costs and risks remain".The title is most interesting and you sense a feeling of ambiguity and uncertainness in it. There is trouble with nuclear power but it is safe. High costs and risks remain are true of any form of power generation. The editorial board reports, "A rising chorus of support... read more »

Where Senators Obama and Biden Stand on National Defense
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
Senator Obama has picked Senator Joe Biden as his Vice Presidential running mate. Senator Biden has a long track record in foreign policy that will be explored in the coming days. The following comments are from RedState.com.Consider:* Joe Biden was in favor of the Nuclear Freeze movement of which large parts were subsidized by the KGB.* Joe Biden was in favor of sustaining the communist dictatorship in Nicaragua and against supporting a... read more »

A report from the 2008 Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention by LTC Lee F. Kichen, U.S. Army (Ret.)
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
Just returned from the 109th National Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Orlando. Although Tropical Storm Fay did her best "to rain on our parade", we had a very successful convention. It is clear that the VFW remains a "player" on the national political scene. For five out of eight years, President George W. Bush spoke to us and clearly continues to receive strong support from the VFW for his role as a wartime Commander in Chief.... read more »

Obama's Friend, America's Enemy
By Dr. Richard Swier | 09/12/08
These are excerpts from the National Review Online editorial, "Obama's Friend, Americas Enemy"."Have you ever been a friend or business associate of a terrorist? Not someone who, to your shock and horror, turned out secretly to have bombed government buildings. No, the question is whether you've ever befriended an unreconstructed radical whose past was well known to you when you entered his orbit and walked through doors he opened for... read more »
