Your Tax Dollars, in Poetry

By April Coggins | 11/06/08

I don't know about everyone else, but when my family budget faces a deficit, I always hire a poet so that I don't feel as badly. Gee, that's what the Washington State Legislature and Governor does, too!  Washington state's official poet was hired in December 2007, too late to be reported on the current state employee salaries list, but he is paid from the Arts Commission budget, so I'll be looking for it when it's... read more »

America is Being Sold Down the River

By April Coggins | 11/04/08

This tells it all. We must fight back. U.S. Representative Christopher Shays of Connecticut, has lost his bid for an 11th term in Congress. "I have called Jim Himes to congratulate him on being the next member of congress from the fourth congressional district." An emotional Shays added, "I have always known that you can have great elections when you win and great elections when you lose." He thanked the over 800 volunteers who... read more »

And If Life Still Isn't Fair, We Will Break Your Other Leg

By April Coggins | 10/30/08

Obama's cabinet in waiting. Wealthy liberals including George Soros provided the Center for American Progress an initial budget of about $10 million and 75 staffers. Now it has about 150 staffers and spends more than $25 million a year. Its reputation is solid among government insiders, and one of its blogs, Think Progress, gets heavy traffic. But the center could instantly vault to greater visibility and importance if Obama is elected and... read more »

Local Business News

By April Coggins | 10/27/08

Long time local business Largent's Pullman Appliance is moving into the former Curves for Women location on South Grand Avenue, next door to the Department of Licensing.  This is a great location for the appliance store.  The Grand Avenue exposure and improved parking should be very positive for their business. I wish them much success! read more »

Is Your 401(k) Account Safe With the Democrats in Power?

By April Coggins | 10/25/08

No, it's not. As bizarre and unrealistic as it sounds, the Democrats are toying with the idea of seizing private 401(k) accounts to bail out Social Security. I don't believe that  the Democrats would be brazen enough to outright seize the accounts, but I do believe that they will incrementally punish people for not transfering retirement savings into government accounts. And we all know about Obama's plan to "spread... read more »

Plumbers in Name Only

By April Coggins | 10/25/08

Last night on CNN, Larry King interviewed Michael Moore in his kitchen. In an attempt to counteract the real-life Joe the Plumber, Michael Moore had two guys dressed in "Plumbers for Obama" t-shirts, supposedly to do some sort of plumbing work in the vicinity of the kitchen sink. Except they never actually did any work. They didn't appear to have tools or have even the foggiest idea of what... read more »

Obama: Third Generation Marxist

By April Coggins | 10/20/08

Okay, you will need to put on your conspiracy hat for this post.  There are some amazing coincidences that have made me go, hmmmmmmm? According to this newspaper clipping and verbal testimony in the 1948 Un-American Activities in Washington State, the Communist Party's Seattle headquarters was located at 1916 Second Ave, near Stewart Street. According to this Chicago Tribune article from 2007, Obama's grandfather,... read more »

The more things change, the more they stay the same

By April Coggins | 10/20/08

What I have been reading this weekend: A History of Communism in Washington State. The site chronicles the long history of the Communist Party in the state of Washington (especially it's stronghold in Seattle) from 1919 up through today. It's a rather long read, but fascinating.  What I found most amazing is how little has changed over the past ninety years.  The names may be different but the players remain... read more »

Stupid Government Idea of the Day

By April Coggins | 10/18/08

In order to warn children to stay away from the homes of sex predators this Halloween, the state of Maryland is ordering convicted sex offenders to post this sign of a festive pumpkin on their door.  I dunno, but doesn't it look just like a Halloween decoration?  Why didn't the authorities of Maryland send out a plain, printed sign instead of designing one that will attract children? Or at least design a sign that... read more »
