Paging Al Gore

By April Coggins | 03/06/09

Pullman has set a new record low temperature of 9F, shattering the previous record of 12F. Al Gore and his mad scientist sidekick James Hansen would condescendingly explain to us that it's the weather masking the climate.  So stop being greedy and turn off your evil, CO2 producing heat, it really is too warm underneath all this cold. read more »

Lunacy in Olympia

By April Coggins | 02/23/09

Perhaps we should rename it O'Loonpia.  Just passed by the State House, Bill 1033, making  lead wheel weights illegal. These weights are used by tire retailers for balancing wheels.  The weights are crimped on to the wheels, a few may fling off during driving, but that's an unlikely exception. Even if one does come loose, it hardly poses a threat to the environment.  This zero- tolerance for lead is getting out of... read more »

All Aboard the Husky Railroad Job

By April Coggins | 02/06/09

According to the fine folks at Sound Transit, the Husky Stadium taxpayer theft remodel is going full steam ahead,  From today's Seattle Times: A proposed Husky Stadium remodel has added $1.6 million to the cost of building light rail to the University of Washington. Sound Transit approved the increase Thursday for utility-line relocations near its future stadium station. This year's work involves demolishing a building that houses a... read more »

Say It Ain't So, Don!

By April Coggins | 02/05/09

Looks like Don Brunell, president of Association of Washington state Business and Washington state chamber of commerce, has gone over to the dark side.  His latest column is spent promoting the global warming scam and in it he uses the bankrupt country of Iceland as his model to justify bringing geothermal to Washington state.  As a conservative, free-market capitalist, I am extremely disappointed in Mr. Brunell, to say... read more »

Oh, the Irony of It All

By April Coggins | 02/05/09

Yesterday, a sales representative for a helmet manufacturer was in our store and we were discussing the the new CPSIA lead law.  He told us that his company had their children's helmets tested and they just barely passed the maximum lead content allowed by the new law.  He said that the helmets themselves passed well under the maximum.  What almost pushed them over was the lead content in the ink of the federal... read more »

Eyes Wide Open

By April Coggins | 02/05/09

The following letter appeared in last week's Whitman County Gazette.  Hopefully, our Commissioners are listening.   We moved into the middle of the Palouse farm-ground with our "eyes wide open." We understood there would be dust, chemical spraying, smokey stubble fires, cat-eating coyotes, huge slow-moving farming equipment on roads and roads closed by snow in winter. That's part of country life.   Along with that, you get the... read more »

Quote of the Day

By April Coggins | 02/05/09

According to an article in today's Lewiston Morning Tribune, the Idaho Senate has approved a bill allowing for water to be sold across state lines, specifically to allow Moscow to sell water to the Hawkins Companies in Whitman county. Sen. Elliot Werk, D-Boise, asked whether the bill would somehow "circumvent the will of the Whitman County citizens, by providing water and allowing this development to proceed." He also questioned whether... read more »

Let's Play "Balance the Budget"

By April Coggins | 02/04/09

Governor Christine Gregoire is asking for our help in balancing the state's budget, which is projected to have a deficit of 3-5 billion dollars.  She has an interactive site where you can play with the budget numbers.  I had the budget balanced in less than five minutes, with a $500 million surplus. Of course it's easy for me since I don't have any political cronies to protect and provide for, unlike many of the politicians... read more »
