Sun Publishes Part 2 of Church Assessment Story; Not Much Better
By SB Pietas | 08/08/08
I hate to pile on--because that's clearly what the San Bernardino Sun is doing to the assessor's office--but I feel I must comment on Wesley Hughes' latest article.First off, I'm happy to see that Hughes got all of the names and titles right in today's story. Jessie Gill is no where to be found, apparently replaced with Sally Hill, Chief of Assessment Services (which is her real name). The good parts of the story stop there. In my response... read more »

Negative Story on Assessor's Office Doesn't Mention Aleman or Postmus
By SB Pietas | 08/07/08
Here's a shocker: The San Bernardino Sun has a negative story posted on the assessor's office--and it doesn't mention or even involve Assessor Bill Postmus or former Assistant Assessor Adam Aleman. It seems that a High Desert church used to think it was exempt from taxation. This year, the assessor's office decided that only 54% of the site was used for church purposes, making the rest taxable. The church was given a $12k tax bill. Unfortunate,... read more »

Sun: Tuition reimbursement rule tightened
By SB Pietas | 08/06/08
Lauren McSherry has a story posted on the BOS vote to tighten requirements for county employees to receive tuition reimbursement in excess of $1,000. This is a move in response to Adam Aleman being granted more than $8,000 to cover the cost of classes only peripherally related to his work for the County. Aleman was arrested and charged in June with six felonies relating to his official duties. Aleman soon resigned from his position with San... read more »

PE: Assessor official pleads not guilty to felony charges in San Bernardino County
By SB Pietas | 07/30/08
The Press-Enterprise has a more extensive story posted describing the arraignment of former Assistant Assessor Adam Aleman. Also of note, the PE's story has embedded video of Aleman at his arraignment, next to a woman who appears to be his fiancée, Kelly Kuntz. Aleman looks notably different from his assessor's office portrait, which you can view here. Of course, maybe Aleman just altered his photo to make it "100% accurate."Assessor official... read more »
