Who's Next? A Review of Potential Replacement Assessors
By SB Pietas | 02/07/09
Note: This was originally published in July of last year. Considering yesterday's announcement, there may be renewed interest in this posting. Although some information has changed, the article is presented as originally published (with the exception of the addition of Dennis Draeger). If there's one thing Bill Postmus has accomplished, it's been to make people care about the assessor's office in San Bernardino County. Prior to his campaign,... read more »

Assessor Postmus Resigns; Press Release from BOS
By SB Pietas | 02/06/09
As many of you now know, Assessor Bill Postmus has announced his intention to resign next Friday. At around 2PM today, he sent a letter to the employees in his office, as well as sent a letter via his attorney to BOS Chair Gary Ovitt. Shortly thereafter, the following statement was released (H/t to Senor Blogger over at iepolitics.com on this).STATEMENT FROM SUPERVISOR GARY OVITTThe San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors is in receipt of a... read more »

In Pointless Meeting, SB Supes Channel SB Pietas
By SB Pietas | 01/22/09
The scheduled special meeting of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has just concluded. Little of note happened. The Board heard public comments at both the beginning and end of the meeting, and that was the most notable, if not really interesting, part of the meeting. Allen Bartleman, a San Bernardino attorney, provided legal advice to the County, advising that they work toward recall rather than impeachment.Perennial activist E.T.... read more »

Thoughts on Removing an Assessor
By SB Pietas | 01/22/09
At 1 PM today, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will convene for a special meeting to discuss the possible removal of County Assessor Bill Postmus. While Assessor Postmus has been asked to resign by numerous media publications and members of the public over the past few months, little has been done by the Board of Supervisors to cause his office to be vacant. This is not a result of apathy. Until now, there was little legal... read more »

"Obama Bucks" and Republican Women: A Denouncement
By SB Pietas | 10/16/08
First, let me state that the publication and distribution of the "Obama Bucks" drawing is both despicable and highly inappropriate. That much has been made clear, both by my initial reaction to learning of the image, and the response of the public. Without a doubt, it is this sort of material that makes Republicans look bad on issues of race. Republicans have been trying, particularly at the highest levels, to recruit minority support. There has... read more »

SB Sun: Assessor Bill Postmus has announced he is coming back to work
By SB Pietas | 10/10/08
It seems that County Assessor Bill Postmus has decided to resume his duties as a countywide elected official. Hopefully this action is the precursor to a return by Bill Postmus to the sort of leadership we saw during his time on the Board of Supervisors. However, I must question Postmus' release of a document from his doctor stating that his medical leave was not due to substance abuse. Although I've not seen this statement--it is possible that... read more »

Where is Bill Postmus?
By SB Pietas | 10/09/08
That is a question that is starting to be asked by both the media and the public. A year and a half after then-Supervisor Bill Postmus entered a countywide office, he has all but abandoned his duties as county assessor. Originally elected by the public to remove "the last of the corrupt county officials" (referring to incumbent Don Williamson), Bill Postmus has embarrassed San Bernardino County not so much by action as by inaction. The story of... read more »

SB Sun: Former assistant assessor appears in court
By SB Pietas | 09/30/08
Finally, the date has arrived. Adam Aleman has appeared in court for the second time in response to claims that he altered subpoenaed documents and vandalized public property. What I find interesting is the great length of time between each hearing. It was a full month between Aleman's arrest and arraignment, and it has now been two months since then. Why the delay? One has to wonder if there are political considerations. It has been... read more »

PE: High Cost of Transition
By SB Pietas | 09/09/08
Here is Press-Enterprise columnist Cassie MacDuff's view on the early hiring of two transitional staff members for incoming Supervisor Neil Derry. Of note is that both employees formerly worked for Assessor Bill Postmus' office.
