She Said WHAT?
By South Bayster | 01/26/09
I lean towards being pro-choice but found this from Speaker Pelosi on the Drudge Report over the top:PELOSI SAYS BIRTH CONTROL WILL HELP ECONOMYSun Jan 25 2009 22:13:43 ETSpeaker of the House Nancy Pelosi boldly defended a move to add birth control funding to the new economic "stimulus" package, claiming "contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."Pelosi, the mother of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, who once... read more »

Chula Vista's Answer: Taxes and More Taxes
By South Bayster | 01/21/09
In the last decade, Chula Vista's budget has soared, with no real increase in service. For the most part, the massive budget increase was spent on increased salaries and pensions, and increased middle management, at City Hall. With the decrease in revenue (note: even with revenue decreases the income of the City of Chula Vista is about the same as just a handfull of years ago) one would think the spending spree was over, and that it was time to... read more »

A press release from former Chula Vista City Councilwoman, now Assemblywoman Mary Salas, announcing her campaign for State Senate, was floating around this morning. Here is part of the text: "We would like to extend an invitation for you to attend Assemblymember Mary Salas' press conference where she will formally announce her race for the 40th Senate District in 2010. The press conference is scheduled this Saturday, January... read more »

City delays action on cuts pending union talks, vote CHULA VISTA: Facing a $20 million deficit in the coming fiscal year, the Chula Vista City Council last night postponed for one week its decision to make cuts, pending labor union negotiations and a union vote. Proposition 8
By South Bayster | 01/06/09
Just skimming the numbers it looks to me like Proposition 8 passed in a broad arc from the north coast, around to Escondido and Poway, down through east county and into the San Diego communities south of the 8. Looks like gay marriage is something ethnic Democrats and deep suburban Republicans agree on. Is this a useful issue in the future, though? read more »

What Now for Chula Vista?
By South Bayster | 11/20/08
Republican candidates in the City of Chula Vista suffered the same fate as Republicans elsewhere in the county, leaving the city with 3 Democrats on the council to 2 Republicans (and two Republicans who don't always get along). So now it looks like Councilman Steve Castandeda is the defacto Mayor - inheriting a massive budget deficit. So what now? read more »

Lincoln Club Unloads on Chula Vista Democrat Castenada
By South Bayster | 10/30/08
Three flyers in as many days from the Lincoln Club going after Chula Vista Democrat Castenada and supporting Republican Scott Vinson. I've also heard of a flyer from Castenada touting his parent's endorsement, which I would hope he would get. And I got mail from Vinson positive and negative, and Hall (v. Bensoussan) postive and negative. And a piece from bigwig Earl Jentz going after Hall and Vinson. My take: Castenada is... read more »

Chula Vista Update
By South Bayster | 10/23/08
I got a flyer Wednesday from the South Bay Forum attacking Chula Vista City Council candidate Scott Vinson for various issues largely related to his business. Before today I didn't really realize South Bay Forum was a political organization. With their debates and whatnot they really dont sell themselves as such. What I can't figure out is where the South Bay Forum got the kind of money to send out a mailer. I think I'll look into this one and... read more »

It's ON in Chula Vista
By South Bayster | 10/19/08
The factions in Chula Vista have decided that this is a make-or-brake, life-or-death struggle for who rules the roost in Chula Vista, and it's gonna be a bloody battle. Two council seats are up: that of former Republican now Democrat Steve Castaneda, who is running for re-election against Realtor Scott Vinson, and that of Jerry Rindone who is termed out and whose seat has drawn Republican Russ Hall against Democrat Pam Bensousan. In the right... read more »
