Independence Day from Calvert County

By Rick Manning | 07/05/09

4th of July brings visages of fireworks, grillin out and family get togethers.  Calvert County is no different with a fireworks show on the 3rd over the Bay in Chesapeake Beach, and on the 4th over the place where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay in Solomon's Island, Calvert County is truly blessed to have an abundance of Independence Day spirit.   I have been fortunate enough to be... read more »

Iranian elections prove that Bush Doctrine of promoting middle east democracy is the right path

By Rick Manning | 06/23/09

Every tyrant is ultimately scared to death of his own people.  At the fall of his Soviet masters, Romanian despot Nicolai Ceausescu ended up finding himself on the wrong side of farmer's scythes and hoes.  Benito Mussolini was hung by "his" people.  Saddam Hussein was sentenced by his people to death.  History is replete with examples of dictators being turned out by... read more »

Calvert County is filled with caring people

By Rick Manning | 06/18/09

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the back and forth of politics that we forget to recognize what a blessing it is to live in this country.  Personally, I am always amazed by the generosity of the people of my local area - Calvert County. Chesapeake Beach Casino Tax should go up - WAY UP

By Rick Manning | 06/13/09

That's right sports fans.  I, Rick Manning, for the first time in my life am advocating higher taxes - way higher taxes.  But not just any tax, but the tax specifically on the more than $20 million that former Mayor Gerald Donovan raked in from his casino gambling operation. Of course, Donovan's lackey in the state House of Delegates, Sue Kullen proudly passed a local bill that allowed Donovan's operation to continue to exist for... read more »

Did Mike Miller really diss Jesus in the Senate?

By Rick Manning | 06/11/09

The Baltimore Sun reported on their blog that Calvert's own Mike Miller reacted with disgust upon hearing the name of Jesus Christ invoked in a prayer opening a session of the Maryland State Senate.  Upon the completion of the prayer, Mike is reported to have ordered it stricken from the record like Yul Brenner in the 10 Commandments. Now, I like Mike Miller personally.  We don't agree politically, but we banter back and forth... read more »

Calvert County - the Center of Maryland politics

By Rick Manning | 06/11/09

Most people don’t realize that little Calvert County, Maryland has the most powerful representatives in the state, and as a result, the citizens of Calvert can have a profound impact on public policy. In Congress, we are represented by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. The number two ranking Member in the House, and I use the term number two advisedly. The Senate President, Mike Miller, lives in the unincorporated area of... read more »
