AD72 Special Election Watch: And Fullerton's Sharon Quirk is Out...
By El Tiburon | 09/28/09
Total Buzz reported that Democratic candidate Sharon Quirk just announced her decision to drop a short-lived bid for Assembly. Quirk really didn't have a chance of capturing this seat anyway. The Fullerton Councilwoman's posturing did give her some media attention though. read more »

AD72 Watch: Linda Ackerman's RNC Post Could be in Jeopardy
By El Tiburon | 09/22/09
H/T to Brian Joseph at Total Buzz for reporting on this item: Linda Ackerman is in danger of losing her position on the Republican National Committee now that she’s a declared candidate for Mike Duvall’s Assembly seat. Ackerman, the wife of former Senate Republican leader Dick Ackerman, is one of three California representatives on the board that sets the national platform and election strategies of the Republican Party. Under... read more »

New Blog on Little Saigon Politics
By El Tiburon | 09/22/09
I was told of this new blog yesterday by a friend. So far only four posts have been published, but three of them are about the 47th Congressional District race. I'm pleased that this new blog is also in English since Vietnamese will not do us any good. We shall see if this new blog - www.vietpolitics.net - can be as successful as the Bolsavik.com, the other Vietnamese news oriented blog in Orange County. Good luck and happy... read more »

SD34 Watch: Still No Credible Candidate to Challenge Lou Correa
By El Tiburon | 08/26/09
After months of searching and recruiting, the Senate GOP Caucus is no where close to finding a candidate who can mount a credible challenge against Sen. Lou Correa. According to reliable sources, they (Senate Republicans) first approached Assemblyman Van Tran about a possible run but he declined, opting to focus his enery on a congressional campaign instead. Their next obvious choice was Supervisor Janet Nguyen. Like Tran, Janet... read more »

CD47 Watch: Loretta Sanchez Vacationing on Taxpayers' Dime?
By El Tiburon | 08/09/09
I saw this item on the Orange County Register's OC Watch Dog blog about Rep. Loretta Sanchez and nine other members of Congress flying around the world under the guise of official business but in reality, are actually vacationing. This is a bi-partisan junket. The Wall Street Journal first reported on this event yesterday. Here is a small part of the article: Mr. Baird, a certified scuba diver, said he went on two... read more »

Jerry Amante and Allan Mansoor Switching Places?
By El Tiburon | 08/08/09
Earlier this year Tustin Councilman Jerry Amante announced his candidacy for the 70 AD with a lot of wind behind his back. Amante won the support of many Republican officials in the county, including Ed Royce, John Campbell, Tom Harman, Bob Huff, Mimi Walters and Dick Ackerman. It looks as if Councilman Amante could clear the field like Assemblywoman Diane Harkey did in 2008. The story was slightly different in the neighboring 68 AD... read more »

AD70 Watch: Disappointing Numbers
By El Tiburon | 08/04/09
In the race to succeed Assemblyman Chuck DeVore in the 70th Assembly District, the perceived frontrunner up until today is Tustin Councilman Jerry Amante. He pretty much locked up all the endorsements and seems to be on cruise control from now until election day. However, his weak fundraising report that was recently filed just provided an opening for other challengers who might be sitting on the fence to jump in. Here is... read more »

AD68 Watch: Mansoor Posted Respectable Amount
By El Tiburon | 08/04/09
According to the most recent campaign finance report that Allan Mansoor filed: RAISED: $53,841 LOAN: $100,000 SPENT: $25,134 CASH ON HAND: $135,908 Relatively speaking this is a decent amount of money when compared to other assembly candidates in Orange County. I suspect the economic downturn also played in a role in the smaller amount of money that donors are willing to give this year. Readers might be... read more »

CD47 Watch: FEC Concluded Sanchez Misused Campaign Fund
By El Tiburon | 07/16/09
Martin Wisckol of Total Buzz just posted an opinion from the Federal Election Commission on whether it was proper for members of Congress to use their campaign money for personal items such as clothes. The FEC ruled that it was improper for Loretta Sanchez to do it. Here is the full text of Wisckol's post: SANCHEZ IMPROPERLY USED CAMPAIGN MONEY TO BUY CLOTHES Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Garden Grove, improperly used campaign money to... read more »

CD47 Watch: Competitive Primary Could Benefit Van Tran
By El Tiburon | 07/07/09
That is what I truly believe. While his detractors would want people to believe that Van Tran is rattled by Q.X. Pham's entrance into the race against Loretta Sanchez, a competitive GOP primary will actually help the Assemblyman retool his campaign sooner than if he was running unchallenged. Futhermore, this little competition will generate more media attention to the race and provide Tran with a legitimate urgency to raise money... read more »
