BIOGRAPHY

Michelle Malkin makes news, and makes waves, with a unique combination of investigative journalism and incisive commentary. She's not afraid to expose hypocritical environmentalists, needle pork-loving politicians or criticize the MTV generation's morally deprived icons. Most of all, she's not afraid to hold up the Immigration and Naturalization Service to the relentless scrutiny it deserves post-Sept. 11. Her ground-breaking research and reporting led to her first book, "Invasion: How America Still Welcomes Terrorists, Criminals, and Other Foreign Menaces to Our Shores" (Regnery 2002), in which she argues "immigration must be treated as a national-security issue." The book debuted on The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list at No. 14 (week of Nov. 17, 2002). Her second book, "In Defense of Internment: The Case for 'Racial Profiling' in World War II and the War on Terror" (Regnery 2004), offers a defense of the most reviled wartime policies in our history.

Malkin began her career in newspaper journalism with the Los Angeles Daily News, where she worked as an editorial writer and weekly columnist from 1992-94. In 1995, she was named Warren Brookes Fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. In 1996, she joined the editorial board of the Seattle Times, where she penned editorials and weekly columns for three and a half years. Today, her syndicated column appears in over 100 papers nationwide.

Malkin's work has been cited in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Reader's Digest and U.S. News and World Report. Her freelance work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Weekly Standard and Reason magazine. She has appeared on "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hannity and Colmes," "The McLaughlin Group" and "20/20," and is currently a Fox News commentator.

Her hard-hitting -- and news-breaking -- commentary has been honored by several national organizations. Among the journalism awards Malkin has received:

• The 1998 Council on Governmental Ethics Laws (COGEL) national award, for outstanding service for the cause of governmental ethics and leadership, for investigative columns that exposed campaign finance abuses by Washington state Democrats, Republicans and political organizations.

• The 1998 Second Amendment Foundation's James Madison Award, for excellence in journalism "promoting the individual right to keep and bear arms."

• The 1997 National Society of Newspaper Columnists writing award, for general interest columnists in newspapers with a circulation of at least 100,000 (2nd place).

• The 1997 Evert Clark Science Award for journalists under the age of 30, for commentary and analysis of environmental regulations and science policy (honorable mention).

Malkin, the daughter of Filipino immigrants, was born in Philadelphia and raised in southern New Jersey. She worked as a press inserter, tax preparation aide and network news librarian; she is also a lapsed classical pianist. Malkin's hobbies include crocheting and pier fishing with her dad.

A graduate of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, Malkin currently lives with her husband and daughter in Maryland.

"Fishiest" Information Emanating from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

By Michelle Malkin | 08/07/09

Czardom has its privileges. This week, President Obama's health care overlord, Nancy DeParle, launched a taxpayer-funded initiative to recruit an Internet Snitch Brigade that will combat "disinformation about health insurance reform." As the White House explained in a special online bulletin: "These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain e-mails or through casual conversation. Since we can't keep track of all of... read more »

The Activist Left Can't Stand the Competition

By Michelle Malkin | 08/05/09

The activist Left can't stand competition. Last week in Long Island, N.Y., opponents of the Democrats' government health care takeover legislation outnumbered Obama supporters 10 to one. The Tea Party activists toted American flags and signs that read "WE CAN'T AFFORD FREE HEALTH CARE," prompting one foe to stalk into the peaceful crowd, gesticulate wildly and shout unintelligible threats at the top of his lungs. The same Democrat... read more »

Obama Staunchly Defends Ethically Challenged Chris Dodd

By Michelle Malkin | 07/31/09

Everything you need to know about false Hope and Change can be found in one picture: the image of President Obama embracing embattled Sen. Chris Dodd. The troubled Democrat is in deep over his sweetheart Countrywide home-loan deals, corporate bailout cash and crony associations. New revelations by Countrywide whistleblower Robert Feinberg confirm what more and more of Dodd's constituents in Connecticut are coming to realize: He's a lying... read more »

Hope and Change Comes Wrapped in Brass Knuckles

By Michelle Malkin | 07/29/09

Six months into the Obama administration, it should now be clear to all Americans: Hope and Change came to the White House wrapped in brass knuckles. Ask the Congressional Budget Office. Last week, President Obama spilled the beans on the "Today Show" that he had met with CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf, just as the number crunchers were casting ruinous doubt on White House cost-saving claims. Yes, question the timing. The CBO is... read more »

Obama's Nutty Professor, John Holdren, and Forced Population Control

By Michelle Malkin | 07/24/09

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius tried to reassure citizens in New Orleans this week that Obamacare bureaucrats will make sound medical decisions for all Americans. She failed. Under the government-run plan, she promised, a team of health care experts will recommend what should be covered: "I think it would be wise to let science guide what the best health care package is." Gulp. It's the Obama administration's... read more »

Obamacare Democrats Vote Against Immigration Verification

By Michelle Malkin | 07/22/09

Big Nanny Democrats want to ration health care for everyone in America -- except those who break our immigration laws. Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee defeated an amendment that would have prevented illegal aliens from using the so-called "public health insurance option." Every Democrat on the panel voted against the measure. Nevada GOP Rep. Dean Heller's measure would have enforced income, eligibility and immigration... read more »

Administrative Costs of Obamacare Would Be Astronomical

By Michelle Malkin | 07/17/09

If you think government is too big and too costly, wait until Obamacare kicks in. The Congressional Budget Office put the price tag of the House Democrats' health care takeover plans at $1.5 trillion over 10 years. But the CBO's fine print included a telltale caveat: "We have not yet estimated the administrative costs to the federal government of implementing the specified policies, nor have we accounted for all of the proposal's likely... read more »

Obama's 'Overlord of Science Policy' Embraces Radical Views

By Michelle Malkin | 07/15/09

The New York Times recently warned its readers about a wacky scientist in the Obama administration. But the fish wrap of record let the real nut job off the hook. Reporting last week on the president's choice to head the National Institutes of Health, Times writer Gardiner Harris noted that praise for Dr. Francis S. Collins "was not universal or entirely enthusiastic." The geneticist is causing "unease," according to the... read more »

"Crap Sandwich Redux" Stimulus Talk is Turning Stomachs

By Michelle Malkin | 07/10/09

Let there be no doubt: Democrats are the party with two ideas: borrow and spend. The only vigorous internal debate on the left revolves around two questions: How much and how much more? Even as the first trillion-dollar stimulus craters, the debt-o-crats are floating yet another grand act of generational theft to create the illusion of jumpstarting the economy. Call it Spawn of Spendulus. Return of the Porkulus Beast. Crap Sandwich Redux.... read more »

'Jackson Fever' Overshadows Genuine Sacrifice

By Michelle Malkin | 07/08/09

Flags flew at half-staff this week in California's state Capitol. No, not for Michael Jackson. For Private First Class Justin Casillas. Pfc. Casillas died in a suicide bombing attack on his Army base in eastern Afghanistan on the Fourth of July. While Americans enjoyed fireworks and Hollyweird mourned the "king of pop" with wretched excess, the family of Pfc. Casillas learned that the 19-year-old paratrooper with the U.S. Army's... read more »
