Is "Homegrown" Todd Gallinger part of Team Agran?

By Tyler Holcomb | 09/02/08

YES.  Todd Gallinger was added to the Keep Irvine Great 2008 slate while I was on vacation, a fact I missed while  preparing this post on the day of my return.  Humorously, while Todd's smiling visage appears at the top of the slate web page, he is not yet listed (as of September 2) as one the supported candidates in the body of the web page -tylerhDriving around Irvine on Labor Day I counted three dozen Sukhee Kang signs and... read more »

Irvine Open Thread

By Tyler Holcomb | 08/26/08

It's time for the weekly Tuesday morning Irvine politics post, but, alas, I am not here to do it. I'm at Burning Man.If you're going to be on the Playa, drop by Asylum Village  (7:30 and A) and look for the big bike. We can catch up on OC Politics over Tanqueray and TonicIf you're remaining in the "default" world, this is an open thread to:1.  Post any Irvine news that I should have posted if I were here;2.  Complain about stuff I... read more »

Saddleback and Irvine Valley College Likely to Keep Accreditation

By Tyler Holcomb | 08/17/08

Saddleback's and IVC's accreditation status has become an issue for this year's South OC Community College District (SOCCD) races.  A degree from an unaccredited college is basically worthless, so any displeasure by the accreditation organization is newsworthy -- and the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges and Western Association of Schools and Colleges ( ACCJC/WASC) is displeased with IVC and Saddleback.... read more »

Irvine City Council: The Games begin

By Tyler Holcomb | 08/12/08

The Irvine City Council race again features two slates led by faces familiar to Irvine voters since way back when Amanda Beard was swimming for Irvine's club team. This year's round of Christina vs Larry has been officially christened as Team Irvine vs Keep Irvine Great.  Team Irvine is Christine Shea for Mayor, Steven Choi and Retired Irvine Police Lieutenant Pat Rodger.  Their five point platform is to get traffic moving again, put... read more »

Irvine Downticket Races: SNORESVILLE.

By Tyler Holcomb | 08/05/08

Last week I covered who had filed for Irvine city council races. The faces were familiar but the race was real.  Today's post covers the remainder of the local Irvine elections, but here is the summary:  zzzzzzz. The OC Register Registrar of Voters' excellent candidate filing web tool shows only incumbents running for the  school district (IUSD) and water district (IRWD). IUSD Board member Gavin Huntley-Fenner helpfully notes that... read more »

South OC Community College District Races

By Tyler Holcomb | 08/04/08

SOCCCD races have provided some wonderful fireworks in past years, but the Tom Fuentes' led majority seems well-positioned to deliver another victory this year. This year's dominant theme is Republican Incumbent vs Faculty Union challenger.Jubal has already discussed the Area #6  (Lake Forest, Anaheim Hills) race between Tom Fuentes and challenger Bob Bliss. In my backyard of Irvine, Tom Fuentes ally and Area #1 Trustee David Lang faces... read more »

Irvine City Council race taking shape

By Tyler Holcomb | 07/29/08

Allan Bartlett contributed substantially to this post2008 will be the first national election in two decades with neither a Bush nor a Clinton at the top of the ballot, but Irvine voters will have the same choices they have had  since the 90s:  a "Progressive" slate led by Larry Agran versus a "Family Values" slate led by Christina Shea. Beth Krom's Mayorship and the two council seats held by Larry Agran and Steven Choi are up for... read more »

Where the Money Goes: Irvine Edition

By Tyler Holcomb | 07/21/08

Hello!I (tylerh) have joined the OC Blogpen to focus on Irvine and to provide a "center" voice within  OC Blog's center-right political orientation.  I'm not much of a Bush-style "conservative," but I heartily agree with the OCBlog community that the government interferes too much and often spends our tax dollars unwisely.  Financial Conservatism never goes out of style. To help you be a more informed financial conservative I've... read more »
