The Troy Davis Death Penalty Circus

Amnesty International - that self-righteous crowd of folks who Blame America First and think that all death row inmates are victims of cruel abuse, poverty or a racist criminal justice system- have a new cause célèbre, Troy Davis.

AI has distributed purplish colored t-shirts, emblazoned with large lettering, “I AM TROY DAVIS.” They are being worn by death penalty opponents and those who maintain that Davis is innocent. He was convicted 20 years ago of killing a Savannah police officer.

Davis sympathizers never fail to note that Officer Mark Allen MacPhail was “white,” implying that Davis, an African-American, is being railroaded. This despite the fact that Davis has had extraordinary access to every legal remedy under our court system, state and federal. He lost his bid for a new evidentiary hearing in two important court rulings. The Georgia Supreme Court turned him down and last month, the federal appeals court in Atlanta rejected Davis’appeal. He has now filed a last-ditch appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Troy Davis is painted as an oppressed victim, a martyr. The Amnesty International Davis rallies and the anguished amen chorus of supporters in the media and the likes of Jimmy Carter, Desmond Tutu, Al Sharpton. etc.- the usual suspects - cloud the real issue here. The travesty being committed has nothing to do with the alleged innocence of Troy Davis - his conviction still stands as of this writing. Nor does it have to do with the issue of the death penalty - it's legal in Georgia.

The travesty is that the will of the people is delayed and made a mockery of, not to mention the inexcusable wait for justice to be served on the part of the victim's family. The dead officer’s mother has said she was “disgusted” by the show of support for Davis. Me too.

I say let's end this circus and get on with the administration of justice - in this instance, lethal injection.

Troy Davis

Roman Catholics are against the death penalty.  Our catechism states that there are very few instances when the death penalty is necessary to protect society.  This seems to be one of those instances.  If he has not been a threat for 20 years and there's some doubt that he committed the murder (some witnesses recanted their testimony) commuting his sentence to Life Imprisonment with no parole would continue to protect society.  Either way, (lethal injection or life in prison) the officer will never return to us.

I have often been asked if I would feel differently if it was a family member or a close friend who was the murder victim.  I have to honestly say I don't know.  However, I would hope that I would be able to act in concert with my convictions that all life is made in God's image and only He has the right to terminate it--from fertilization until natural death.

God bless you.

I share your faith but not

I share your faith but not your opposition to the death penalty as many Catholics don't either.
