Sovereignty Florida Style

I was on a conference call last night sponsored by the Campaign for Liberty in Florida. The Campaign for Liberty in Florida is headed by Mark Cross, who moderated the over 900 participants during the online conference call. The Campaign for Liberty's mission is "to promote and defend the great American principles of individual liberty, constitutional government, sound money, free markets, and a non interventionist foreign policy, by means of educational and political activity."

The call was with Florida Senator Carey Baker and Florida Representative Scott Plakon. These two legislators are behind a serious movement to introduce three pieces of legislation that will reestablish Florida's sovereignty. The intent is clear, to directly confront the federal government.

The three legislative initiatives may be found at FLFreedom.org. The strategy is to have at least 21 of Florida's Senators and 61 Representatives to co-sponsor each of the bills before the Florida Legislature convenes on March 2, 2010. With this majority the bills will surely be heard in committee and brought to the floor in each house for a vote. Both Senator Baker and Representative Plakon understand this is an uphill battle. Both understand that if this is not done now Floridians may lose the chance to regain at least some of their freedoms and liberties.

The most aggressive of the three pieces of legislation is the The Health Care Freedom Act (HJR37/SJR72). This piece of legislation will put on the 2010 November ballot a Florida Constitutional Amendment, which will defend every Floridians' right to reject any and all healthcare mandates from Congress. Why is this piece of legislation so important?

For the first time in our history Congress is on the verge of passing legislation that mandates, under penalty of imprisonment, the purchase of a product or service. This is unheard of and clearly un-Constitutional. President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Senate Leader Reed have the clear intent to mandate that all Americans purchase health insurance, regardless of need or desire. This amendment would prevent that from happening. As Representative Plakon pointed out this protects Floridians not only from any federal mandate but also protects us from any future state mandate, such as that passed in Massachusetts. This amendment requires a super majority to get on the ballot. This will be the most difficult to pass in my opinion because it restricts government and will bring down the full force of the current administration upon Florida.

Both Senator Baker and Representative Plakon understand that the federal government will threaten, sue and cut funding from Florida to punish us if any or all of these pieces of legislation or the Florida Constitutional Amendment pass. Senator Baker pointed out that other states have already seen the federal government lash out against states that passed The Firearms Freedom Act (HB21/SB98). Letters have been sent to local gun dealers warning them of arrest and stiff fines if they follow the laws of their state. This is unbelievable but true.

Finally, House HM19 / Senate SM 96 simply reinforces the 10th Amendment of our Constitution, which states:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Senator Baker and Representative Plakon are brave men, not unlike those fifty-eight men who signed our Declaration of Independence, which resulted in the American Revolution. Are these men and those that co-sponsor the newest breed of American Patriots? I believe so, what do you think?

If you want to become a citizen co-sponsor of any or all of these bill please go here and sign up. To learn more about the Campaign for Liberty go here.
