Showing Her True Colors, Scozzafava Endorses the Democrat
By Chip Hanlon | 11/01/09 | 03:15 PM EDT | 12 Comments
Boy, now all those Republicans who endorsed Dede Scozzafava are looking particularly foolish for having saddled us with this loser.
Why? In all-too-classic act of vindictiveness, she endorsed the Democrat, Owens in the NY-23 race she just dropped out of: Scozzafava Endorses Owens
So much for this statement, which this troll made just yesterday in announcing her withdrawal from the race:
"I am and have always been a proud Republican," Scozzafava added. "It is my hope that with my actions today, my party will emerge stronger and our district and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations."
Some way to help the GOP "emerge stronger," there, Dede!
I had been feeling like Republicans on the winning side of this race shouldn't spend too much time cabbage-patching in the end zone, and that we should fight the urge to endlessly harangue those who backed Scozzafava. Learning lessons from this race and moving forward more unified would have been a desirable goal. It still is a desirable goal.
BUT, this has become such a complete fiasco that I am now firmly in the "heads must roll" camp.
Let's get Hoffman over the goal line on Tuesday, then start sharpening the long blades on Wednesday.

Shouldn't the NRCC endorse Owens, then? They trusted the judgement of the locals and this is the Republican they chose. We have to back their play no matter what, right?
Pathetic.

|The NRCC has hit a new low with this race. Good riddance Dede. It's obvious the NRCC needs new leadership, and fast.

|They are amongst us, and they call themselves Republicans. We must purge them from the party and move on. This is particularly true in Washington State where we have the Mainstream Republicans of Washington. They cannot be trusted and many of them are actually Democrats.

|All the time, effort and money the Republicans spent supporting her, and this is what she does. A big Krunk You to the party. To think of all the money the NRCC poured into this this race. David Harmer, on the other hand, a true Republican, with a better shot at winning than Dede, as pretty much received jack didly squat in support from the party nationally. It just goes to show, that with the exception of a few (Pence comes to mind), the GOP "leadership", still has not learned anything from the last 2 elections.

|Boehner and Cantor have to be distraught over this. GOP leaders stuck their necks out for her, and this is the repayment. The national party MUST reconsider the strategy of recruiting "New York" Republicans. A meaningless letter next to the person's name is less than a consolation prize, and it should not be a goal.

|I said it before, I'll say it again: GOP needs to get rid of that "conservative" label, its killing us. It has become meaningless because of all the negative connotations the far left wing liberals have attached to it. This Dede fiasco proves my point.
The term "conservative" during Reagan's time meant something entirely different and was construed as a "positive" thing. Now, its a different story!
Unfortunately, today that "conservative" label is a ball and chain and its taking us down to the bottom of the ocean.
We're drowning because of ONE WORD: Conservative. Lets get rid of it. We can simply be what we have been all along: "Republicans." We ARE the Grand Old Party, we need to start acting like it. Lets reclaim what we ORIGINALLY were and not let others define us.
We need to get back on track.

|Socrates strikes again as Scoaazfava cries "Sour grapes". Actually I think that the RNC encouraged Scozzafava to endorse her Democratic opponent. The RNC just like the DNC are scared of a person they have no controll over like Hoffman, an independent. The whole idea is very sad.

|The NRCC, June 2009
Make no mistake about it, John McHugh is an incredibly qualified nominee for Secretary of the Army and he deserves a swift confirmation. With that being said, there is no doubt that White House Chief of Staff and former DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel was well aware of the political ramifications surrounding this selection when this plan was hatched. The party boss in the West Wing saw a political opportunity and he seized on it. Therefore, any attempts by Congressional Democrats to downplay their interest in the seat should be taken as the intellectually dishonest spin that it is.
Machiavelli at his best. Set the trap and the right-wing took the bait....
Rahm has already won regardless of who wins in Tuesday...

|I wait with baited breath to hear the response from Newt, Steele and all the idiots that supported her candidacy in the first place.

|This is a sad example of the problem with New York's system of having the party leader select the nominee instead of open primaries like everywhere else. I wouldn't blame Scozzafava too much though. Hoffman promised to support whomever the party bosses picked in return for being allowed to interview for the spot. then ran as a third party candidate when he didn't get the nod. Can't blame her for being ticked or for thinking a persons honesty is the most important factor in what kind of elected official he will be.

|I live in Maryland's First Congressional District and a similar situation played out last year.
The GOP voters of our district, which runs from the eastern suburbs of Baltimore and around Chesapeake Bay to encompass all of Maryland's Eastern Shore, turned out longtime RINO incumbent Wayne Gilchrest in the primary and instead selected a state senator, Andy Harris. Dr. Harris has one of the most conseravtive voting records in the Maryland Senate and savaged Gilchrest during the campaign for the steadily leftward drift Gilchrest had exhibited over the last several terms (in his last term he was the most likely GOP Congressman to cross over.)
Harris won even with the NRCC, Michael Steele, and Newt Gingrich endorsing the incumbent. Sound familiar?
But a month before the election, Gilchrest came out and endorsed the Democratic challenger, Frank Kratovil, and it ended up being just enough for Kratovil to win a plurality of the vote 49% to 48%, with a Libertarian candidate taking 3% of the total.
I just thought I'd bring this up, particularly if Owens pulls this race out in a district which went 65-35 for McHugh.

|Chip: Good post.
I liked it when you said it at the end: "start sharpening the long blades". I am ready and begin at the local level, then go way up to the top!
I am tired of Republicans who pretend to be "Conservative", but ends up being a wishy-washy moderate and play games with the Democrats with our lives and pocketbook. That will come to an end!
