The Sheriff, CCW Policy, And The Republican Party
By Allan Bartlett | 03/25/09 | 11:33 PM EDT | 6 Comments
The issue of concealed carry weapons(CCW) policy has reached the inner sanctum of the Republican Party here locally in OC. It has been bubbling up ever since the new sheriff decided that she was going to implement her own views regarding this policy after she was appointed sheriff last year. Last month, an effort was mounted by Bruce Whitaker of the Central Committee to pass a resolution of no confidence against Mrs Hutchens' CCW policy. It narrowly missed getting the necessary two thirds vote to take up the issue under suspension of the rules by three votes, 24 to 16.
The issue now resides in the party's Resolution Committee. Chairman Scott Baugh appointed me as the new chairman of the committee at the last meeting. The political "hot potato" is now in my lap. It is my job to call a meeting of the committee and report back what happened to the Executive Committee. I have chosen the date of Saturday April 4th at 10am at a place TBD. My intention is to have the meeting be as open as possible and let as many Republicans as possible come speak their piece on this issue...this includes the sheriff, should she desire to come down and explain her policy to the committee. As soon as the location is nailed down, I will be sending her an invitation to speak. I have to say that going into this, alot of central committee members are very disturbed by her stated policy of narrowly interpreting the law that gives her wide discretion about issuing permits. This issue cuts to the core of our civil liberties and Constitution. It should be an interesting and lively meeting.
The members of the Resolution Committee are: Allan Bartlett(chairman), Kristine Alonzo, Mark McCurdy, the Honorable Thomas Fuentes, Pat Burnes, Craig Alexander, and Marcia Gilchrist.

Just let us know the place and we will be happy to share our views. Thanks for the chance once again to let the people of this county know what the sheriff is now doing to law abiding citizens. My hope is that she will attend so that we can all hear her explanation. By the 4th several of my friends will have lost their CCWs, they are devastated. This has had a profound effect on many real people.
Allan: This is a classic TOB (Threshold of Belief) issue. That is, depending on what your core values are, then you will be “..very disturbed by her stated policy of narrowly interpreting the law that gives her wide discretion about issuing permits, This issue cuts to the core of our civil liberties and Constitution” or simply say that you are merely “following the law” and “it is not a Constitutional issue” as the Sheriff asserts. Another conclusion may be psychological: In this forum, Sheriff supporters have talked about a feeling of “being outgunned”. Hurricane Hillmann himself has declared that "we are locked in mortal battle” and I “..am ready to stick a pencil in my eye.". Hence, since the Sheriff has no gun, non one else should be allowed to have one. Whether it is an “LA LE thing”, or a psychological thing, the Sheriff has made it clear she is not budging. Seems like the Republican party has no clue as to what to do, even lacking ambiguity.
Allan, To set your well-intention post straight, Bruce Whitaker did not try pass a resolution nor did he want to. Rather, he submitted a very weak, poorly worded letter he wanted Baugh to sign and forward to the Sheriff. Honestly, we would have looked pretty stupid as a Party if we had done that. This has been rightly forwarded to the Resolutions Committee to discuss and craft something for the whole body to consider (and pass, I hope). The meeting you are going to call is not for the general public and they cannot nor should not be allowed to speak there, including the Sheriff. Only Elected Central Committee Members can attend and speak to the matter and recommend proposed verbiage of the resolution. Get it done; submit to the Body so we can pass it at next month's meeting; don't make a dog and pony show out of it and whatever you do, DO NOT invite the Sheriff to the meeting. It's not appropriate and besides, she's had ample time and opportunity to explain herself and modify her behavior. Talk to Kermit Marsh or Tim Whitacre about what I'm saying. They'll verify its procedurely correct.
CCM: You just confirmed my assertion below. A sign of top intellect is to be able to make progress in the face of ambiguity. What is it called when progress is not made lacking it?
is this lady still around? sandra, go away. seriously. your policies are as arcane as you are. allan, get the republicans to pull their heads out of the sand and put a pro-self defense canidate forward. this election is a one issue vote for me. if your canidate will not issue for the cause of "self defense", they will not get my vote. period. you folks in the republicrat party wonder why you keep losing elections. this is one of the reasons.
If the OC Republican Party supports Hutchens in ANY MANNER, I will be withholding the SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS I traditionally donate to the Republican Party and Republican Candidates up and down the ticket. Needless to say, losing my, my family's and ANYBODY ELSES vote I can convince to join me, will be the least of the party's concern.
She is an anchor around the GOP's neck. Cut her free or sink with her. That's your choice.
