Separation of Powers, Gay Affirmation, and Grassley

The battle continues to wage on here in Iowa against the Iowa Supreme Court's attempt to make same sex marriage a law.  Our nation was not set up on the foundation that a few appointed people in robes could wake up one day and decide something was or was not a law depending on which way the wind was blowing.  Think about it, if that was true they could make anything a law if they wanted to.  Anything.  I am getting sick and tired of the people who don't realize the reality and the dangers of tyranny.

Another thing I am fed up with is those people who push same sex marriage as being a civil rights issue or that upholding traditional marriage is "just like slavery."  Excuse me, but those reasons are embarrassing.  Do you really think that making an entire race of people totally submissive to other human beings in every area of their lives including that they were once treated as property and could be bought, sold, or killed at the whim of their owners is really comparible to not giving those who choose to "love" somebody other than the opposite sex a marriage certificate that only basically says to them "hey, it's okay that I'm gay!"

Although, I have to be fair, it's not just the people who don't understand how the three branches of government operate or those who think you should be able to marry anybody who have me frustrated.  Even though a vast majority of Iowans support marriage being between one man and one woman, Senator Grassley said that he needed "a chance to think" whether he agreed with the Iowa Legislature pushing for a marriage amendment.  Grassley isn't reading his party's platform nor is he listening to his constituents of any party affiliation, because it took more than just Republicans to pass our 1998 Defense of Marriage Act.  (You could argue that things have changed in eleven years but this year even states that voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama also banned same-sex marriage.)

I can't be to hard on Senator Grassley, however, because perhaps he has been attending Sunday services at Pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Church.

Fed up

And I'm fed up with conservatives who can't get it in their head that homosexuality isn't a choice.  You don't choose to be gay any more than you choose to be straight.  I certainly don't remember sitting down at the onset of puberty and deciding to be straight, do you?  As soon as you accept that homosexuality isn't a choice, you have to accept that it is a civil rights issue.  You are denying a right (marriage) based on an inherent (can't be chosen) trait.  It's time to stop pushing reason and evidence aside and accept the truth: homosexuality isn't a choice and denying them equal rights is wrong.

Choices

Adan: the debate should not be restricted to liberals versus conservatives, as much as it should be about absolute values versus relative values. Everything we say and do represents a choice, & How we decide determines the shape of our lives. My Universal Chart of choices goes something like this:

GOOD: Prudence ----- Benevolence

|

|

| Vice ------ Crime

BAD: SELF <------> OTHERS

Your argument can be construed as an excuse for not only a potentially self-destructive life, but the promotion of moral decay.

If there is no struggle between what we want to do and what we actually end up doing, perhaps life has no meaning? In other words, perhaps if we go to first principles, we can then determine if my premise has any merit.

Way Forward

In that case, if you have not done so, you may want to write to Iowa representatives (see below) asking them to vote to bring HJR6 out of committee.

I have - see letter below:

Honorable _____ (see list below)

I understand that you have indicated support for traditional marriage in the past, and hence on behalf of the CotoBuzz Journal loyal readers and those who follow my work in the Red County Blogs, across this great nation, I urge your vote to bring HJR6 out of committee.

Opponents of traditional marriage incorrectly argue that the debate is about equal rights.  It is not.  It is about values and about social engineering, as in social castration.

Should HJR6 fail to come out of committee, I then suggest you vote to amend the Hawkeye State Fight Song to:

On Iowa proudly at the fore
On Iowa on for evermore
Ev'ry loyal HOH will give
A Rousing toast to you
Ev'ry loyal HOH loves you true
On Iowa with your wealth untold
A heritage to us you did unfold
Love of family, love of friend
Love of country too
Makes us proud for what you stand
Our Dear Old Gold.
Iowa! Iowa!
Iowa! Iowa!
I-O-W-A!

Where HOH stands for He or She, or HeShe or SheHe

Please vote your conscience, wherever that may lead you.  In any case, please keep me posted on what you decide to do.
