Hello from Afghanistan!
By Dr. Richard Swier | 03/11/09 | 06:04 AM EDT | 0 Comments
I recieved the following e-mail and special photos from a very good friend and fellow combat veteran from Vietnam, James (Jim) Taylor. Jim and I served together in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. We were both field artillerymen with this unit now stationed in Afghanistan. Jim and I are part of that never ending band of brothers who have served with the 101st. Jim's son David (pictured left) is in the Navy and currently serving in Afghanistan and supporting the 101st Airborne Division. Jim and I were soldiers once, and young.

From my friend Jim Taylor:
Thought you all would enjoy the pictures and message from Lieutenant Colonel Gene Meredith, Commander of the 1st Battalion, 321st Field Artillery currently stationed in Afghanistan. Different time, different war, same heroes.
From Lieutenant Colonel Gene Meredith:
Hi Guys,
I hope all is well. I have attached a few pictures from our travels in Afghanistan. Everyone is doing well, we are settled in, and performing our mission. We have already shot over 1000 155mm Field Artillery Rounds. The guys are loving it! The weather is getting warmer and the snow has melted except in the mountains. I have been traveling the last three weeks visiting my guys. They man 12 different Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) so it takes awhile to get around. However; it has been the experience of a life time not to mention I am getting allot of frequent flyer miles. The pictures are as follows:
The below photo is of my S3 (Shane Morgan), CSM (Brian Harison), and me on Ardennes Street at Salarno. Our HQ at Fort Bragg is on Ardennes as well.
This is the 3 of us with one of my Battery Commanders (Urban Picard) in front of a Puma Helicopter we had a flight on. The gang sign is a W for Warrior, that is our Battalion Motto. Just so you do not think the Army has been taken over by a gang.
Forward Operating Base Sherana Dining Facility. It appears that some WI Home Boys beat me to AF. It was the best meal I have had since leaving the states.
One of my 6 Field Artillery Platoons on FOB Salerno.
My maneuver platoon with their cars.
This is in a British Fort from the 1800s. The Afghanistan Army now mans it. It overlooks the Khost Valley.
The mountains of Afghanistan.
Different view of the Fort.
I hope all is well,
Take Care,
Gene
