SAN DIEGO -- It's long been a luxury for San Diego's elected officials.
But now, only two of 10 city politicians accept a flat-rate auto allowance instead of logging their mileage and getting reimbursed for on-the-job travel.
With so many declining the $9,600-a-year benefit, among the largest offered by any city in the state, will the new City Council eliminate it entirely in a time of austerity?
New Councilman Carl DeMaio said he plans to ask his colleagues to do just that - unless a review by the City Attorney's Office makes the point moot by finding that the allowance violates state law.
"I certainly am prepared to take it away from those who have not already given it up," DeMaio said. "But the question becomes, do you have five votes on the City Council to do that?"
