Peters Endorses Goldsmith

From The Voice of San Diego:

Another Democrat -- this time City Council President Scott Peters -- has endorsed Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith for San Diego city attorney.

Peters came in third to Goldsmith and Aguirre in June's primary election. He has been an outspoken opponent of incumbent City Attorney Mike Aguirre for the last few years.

Peters is one of several Democrats who have thrown their support behind Goldsmith, who formerly served as mayor of Poway and as a Republican state legislator. The judge has also received endorsements from Councilman Ben Hueso, former state Senator Dede Alpert and community activist Rachel Ortiz.

A press release from the Goldsmith campaign quotes Peters and Goldsmith:

"The City Attorney's office should not be about politics," said Peters.  "I am supporting Jan Goldsmith because he is a competent attorney, has a proven legal record and will use the City Attorney's office to enforce the law, not make policy.  Considering the challenges facing the City and the upcoming election of four new Councilmembers, our Mayor and Council will need professional, apolitical legal advice more than ever."

"Scott was a formidable opponent in the primary," said Goldsmith.  "I respect the work he's done as a councilmember and Council President, and I am grateful for his support as we move into another election season."

So what is old Scott Peters running for next? Since the election he's been labor's lapdog in block Sanders contracting out provisions, so he must have ambition. Supervisor? Pretty Republican seat.

City Hall Staff said:

If I were as rude as some of the other bloggers here, I'd list the name of REPUBLICAN staff on the floor that were just so sure Peters was going to win and were all for it.

I think a lot of people thought Peters was going to be in the run-off. Aguirre was the incumbent and Peters had the unions spending boatloads for him, even I thought they were the two run-off choices. There is a difference between reluctantly accepting something, which thankfully turned out to be wrong, and being "all for it"

Don't underestimate how chummy city hall and the council staffs are... at least until we get some real outsiders in there like DeMaio and Thalheimer. Along with Frye that should be real fun to watch.

I For One said:

I for one am overjoyed that Peters and Alpert and Deddah have endorsed Goldsmith... it shows that now its DEMOCRATS crossing party lines to endorse REPUBLICANS. Talk about a sign of weakness! I can't think of any Republicans (except for that county school board member who endorsed against Bilbray and Schwarzenegger) who would do the same!

I haven't been following the blogosphere too closely as of late, but has Maienschein backed Goldsmith?

Poor Brian and Scott said:

Brian M is still reeling from the reality that his political career is OVER. Poor guy.

Speaking of people with politcal careers that are OVER, Peters won't bring many votes to Goldsmith. Again, another tainted politician.

Jan will win this one on his own strength.
