The GOP Snaps Back

The Republican Party of SD could have done a "No, he's not endorsed by us" mailer, which simply would have left people saying "Who cares?" Instead, whereas Brian Maienschein implied he is the GOP candidate of choice, the Party doesn't imply anything. The use of facts is often the most compelling.

Good piece - factual and to the point. It's about time!
It's important for the Republican party to tell the truth. That's part of leadership.
This looks like a hit piece from the DEMOCRATIC Party. Do you think with Maienschein's popularity in Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch, that he might one day run for a different office and that he might be the best candidate the Republican Party has? Whoever approved this mailer is simply "felony stupid."
Would somebody coorect me here if I am mistaken. But I believe that in the last poll its Agurrie, Peters, Maienschein, with a less financed Goldsmith in 4th.
Uh guys I'm confused as towards who to vote for. I want to vote for whomever has the best chance at beating Aguirre. I'm wondering if Jerry Sanders feels the same way?
Brian Maienschein is "felony stupid." It's inconceiveable that he could ever be the "best candidate" the GOP has for ANY office. It's time to find a spot for this DUMB KID in the political graveyard. He's been a major contributor to the demise of this City. If he's still popular in RB and Scripps Ranch, people had better wake up.
If we are lucky Maienschein won't run for anything in the future.
Aren't these kinds of baseless personal insults such as "felony stupid" and refering to a republican elected official as a "dumb kid" grounds for a warning by Mighty Thor.
Aren't these kinds of baseless personal insults towards a republican elected official grounds for a warning by Mighty Thor.
If you think that calling Brian Maienschein stupid or dumb is "baseless" you are among the population that needs to wake up.
My opinion of Councilman Maienschein is irrellevant. I just adhere to the rules of this forum. Now you are personally insulting me. Not that I care about that.
How much are these hit pieces costing the local party? I heard that the party spent around $10K on those Bill and Hillary impersonators this week. When the party endorsed Steve Francis three years ago, I don't recall the party under Nehring sending out Sanders hit pieces. What the heck is going on?
These were not "baseless" or "personal". They were attacks on his poor decision making ability and neglect action as a City Councilman.
Brian Maienschein is "felony stupid." "It's time to find a spot for this DUMB KID in the political graveyard."
I don't see where the councilmans decisions are called into question with these statements. It appears to be more of a personal attack on the councilman than anything else.
Frankly as somebody who is more concerned with getting the incumbant Aguirre out, and not Peters in. These statements reflect very badly on presumed Goldsmith supporters.
Nice effort by Robert Loggia and GOP Budget to change the subject, but let's get back to the facts.
Is this mailer accurate?
Let's hear from the Maienschein supporters.
FINALLY!!! Brian Maienschein IS THE REASON San Diego is in such a financial mess. It's about time that someone points that out.
Kudos to the party for taking a stand to try to make our city a better place to live. Come on, does anyone think that Maeienschein or Peters could actually defeat Aguirre?
As a result of this bruhaha I'm now going from undecided to slightly leaning to Maienschein. My only issue so far with Maienschein is that his name is so darn long. I have good reason to support both him and Goldsmith. Goldsmith was a fine assemblyman and a great judge. But postings such as these indicate that we can expect "more of the same" from Goldsmith supporters.
Furthermore when I spoke to Judge Goldsmith I sensed a lack of eagerness on his part to run for this office. Its as if he were drafted. Going from judge to city attorney is a step down. It seems that the hostility towards Maienschein is that he is not part of the "in crowd"
I just want Aguirre gone, anybody including Peters is better than him!!!!!
Ricky - Changing the subject? I was asking a serious question. And by the way, Brandon, is there any "news" in there? "Someone FINALLY" said what? They just reprinted old news stories. If people don't read the papers, or pay attention to TV news, which covered those trials with rabid interest - then who is gonna read some mailer? Face facts people - only RED COUNTY and like-minded wonks cares about this nitty gritty stuff. The rest of San Diego has lives beyond politics and my point is simply asking - is this really effective use of GOP dollars in getting the Republican message out? Frankly, all it tells me is another Republican was involved in a scandal and if I weren't an involved R, I would think - what else is new? I think it hurts the PARTY more than Brian.
Hey "GOP budget"
Have you noticed a tactic that Red County uses when its "boys" are getting beaten up on the blogs, or when an article gets turned on its head. In that there becomes a flurry of postings to burry that article. With minor news stories, sometimes bad for the right, also sometimes with large space consuming graphics. I'm suprised that this time they didn't come up with a hit piece on Arabo like they usually do.
To Robert - While I agree with you that you shouldn't throw out insults without proper justification, I would strongly encourage you to reconsider a vote for Maienschein. A sitting councilman is going to get killedin the general. With the crisis that was caused by the council (Peters and Maieschien included) Aguirre will no doubt rise to victory against either of them. They were negligent.
Now for the party mailer, I agree with the mailer. The party cannot sit by and watch our city go down the tubes by a "republican" with no other place to go. Brian is a nice guy, but he lied to the Party when he said he would not attack Goldsmith. Then he tried to trick voters into thinking he was the endorsed candidate. I would have been upset if Tony and the party did nothing.
This piece is pitch perfect in hitting Maienschein's most salient weakness: corrupt pension votes. The electoral environment finally has shifted. I believe confluent issues of voter distrust and fiscal incompetence will wash away the corrupt deadwood like BM. Go Judge Goldsmith!
This is a great piece! I just wish I culd have come up with it myself. For those that think the party should not attack another GOPer, I would argue this is WAY overdue for BM. After the pension crap and his absences at council, its best if we don't support people that have harmed the city they were elected to represent.
just my 2 cents....
RE: "Nice Try Establishment"
POSTS ARE NOT POSTED FOR THE REASON YOU CITE. THEY ARE POSTED EITHER AS THEY ARRIVE, OR WHEN I HAVE THE TIME DURING THE DAY. SOMETIMES THAT MEANS IN LUMPS.
MIGHTY THOR
Right now as a voter my first impression of Goldsmith based on what I saw from his apparent supporters is negative. Nobody remembers him as an asemblyman, or knows what he did as a judge. That was a long time ago, and judges actions are supposed to be low profile. But thanks to Mr. Aguirre the office of city attorney has become high profile.
However no matter what Maienschein may have done in contributing to the finnancial mess at city hall. His handling of the wild fires in his district is recent and appeared positive. Many will argue that you will see the true test of a man when he is under fire. I believe that Maienschein had passed that test, and attoned for his sins. As republicans who preach the teachings of Christ. Let us give councilman Maienschein his due, and prey that the American people will be just as forgiving of the Republican Party's sins come November.
My next comment will be badmouthing Aguirre
My main concern is that considering that Peter's is polling in 2nd place, that a run off will be between two democrats. Goldsmith does not seem to want the job. I think he was drafted. No matter how good you are, people are often remembered for the last thing they do. With Goldsmiths stellar carrear as a public servant. A 4th place finish would be devistating. I'd hate to see the man experience a fate similar to Luis Acle.
Now to badmouthing Aguirre. The man wields the office of city attorney like a 5 year old with his dads gun. He goes in there pledging to clean house, insitute fiscal responsibility, yet his office budget has bloated with very little to show for it. Other than a feud with the mayor and an appearance on Keith Obermans worser person in the world segment.
So by bringing up what Maienschein did in the financial crisis. Is tit-for-tat. He has shown that he can redeme himself, while Aguirre has shown himself to by a power hungry con-man.
Goldsmith is endorsed by the Republican party. I hate to say it guys. but the GOP ain't looking to good right now. If I were Aguirre I'd use that endorsement as a hit piece against Goldsmith in a non-partisan city wide election. The Republican Party endorsement certainly did not help the lesser known Steve Francis in his innitial bid for mayor.
Where Meinshien did good during the wild fires. Agurrie did real bad. It is only during crisis situations and election years where people pay attention to politcs.
BEAT AGUIRRE!!!!
Mainshein is damaged goods... a perfect foil for Aguirre.
I have heard that there will be an ethics complaint filed against Brian during the first few days of the week with a press opportunity.
"Beat Aguirre?"
All that I have seen on this blog is personal insults towards councilman Maienschein (which have not been called on) and arguments lacking substance against him. Those innitial postings failed to "shock and awe" me into voting against Maienschein. I have never met councilman Mainshchein, so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. My personal impression of Judge Goldsmith is possitive none-the-less.
Mainschein handled the fires better than Aguirre. His apples in tha regard are shinnier than Aguirres. On the issues. Why is Golsmith better Agurrie? How is his record against corruption stand next to Aguirre's? Heck is his credit score better tha Aguirres? That is something the average voter can wrap their head arround.
Instead its "Mainshein is damaged goods" He is "felony stupid." "It's time to find a spot for this DUMB KID in the political graveyard."
Why?
The City had their bond rating restored today. For those of you so willing to blame Maienschein for the City's financial problems, I hope you are also willing to give him credit for the corrective actions. I am sure the voting public will.
And for anyone still supporting Steve Francis, sorry but
today's news = game over.
There have been some personal insults about Brian, yes. But in fact there have also been a fair number of legitimate arguements about Brians unsuitability for this race and the office in question.
First, the arguement is NOT whether Brian would be better than Aguirre, but instead whether Brian can actually defeat Aguirre. Since Brian was if not the father then at least the uncle of the pension debacle, there is some doubt here.
Second, Brian has alienated the Republican Party with his lie (I will not attack Jan Goldsmith)and campaign antics. Im no expert, but I've seen the GOP central committee fail to endorse for less, which means Brian will not have GOP funds if he were to win the primary. Tough to win without GOP money these days.
