A Message From Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner:

Dear Friend,
PoiznerSteve220.jpg
California is at a critical crossroad. The choices we make for our state today will have a lasting and profound impact for years to come.  I came to Sacramento to help forge solutions so that together we can make better choices and achieve better results for all Californians.

During my first 16 months as Insurance Commissioner, I have worked aggressively to promote and protect core Republican principles: smaller government, lower taxes and individual responsibility. History shows us that these are the building blocks of a free society and a productive economy.

These Republican principles - and a strong belief in solutions that a market-based economy can bring - drove my business decisions in Silicon Valley and today guide me in my duties and responsibilities as California's Insurance Commissioner.

It probably comes as no surprise when I tell you that the Democrats in Sacramento are up to their old tricks and these fundamental principles are under assault again.

This combative environment makes it difficult for our elected officials in Sacramento to make the right and often tough choices, and when they do, the repercussions are bewildering and can be downright punitive.

Just ask Senator Jeff Denham who bravely voted against last year's budget because he believed it was full of gimmicks and trickery that would leave the state deeper in the hole. It turned out he was right - our state deficit has spiraled to an unbelievable $20 billion! And now Jeff is battling to keep his senate seat in the face of a politically motivated and vindictive recall campaign that has been engineered against him by the poster child for why our state needs term limits, Senate Pro Tem Don Perata.

That's why we should all do what we can to defeat the recall.

And speaking of term-limits, earlier this year, I chose to take up the fight to restore integrity to our political process by spearheading the effort to defeat Proposition 93 and protect California's term limits law.  Together, we stopped Senator Perata and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez's shameless power grab.

While Don and Fabian may be marching toward the Capitol exit sign, our work must continue in order to hold the new Democrat legislative leadership accountable to the people.

This will be one of the most crucial and competitive elections in decades and this is why I have joined the John McCain for President campaign as a statewide Co-Chairman.  With the Democrats in control of Congress and the state legislature, we must work together to make California competitive again.

Our success in this year's election depends a great deal on the ability of the California Republican Party to register voters and turn them out at the polls.  To make sure the party has the tools and resources it needs to get the job done, I'm doing what I can to communicate with key Republican leaders like you, to hear your views and concerns and work with you to energize volunteers across our state. And one thing I have heard loud and clear is how important it is to build the party from the ground up and empower our grassroots activists. This is why I recently committed to the CRP to double the bounty paid to GOP committees and volunteer groups for registering voters.

In addition, I'm committed to raising money for our GOP candidates and county parties so that we have the financial strength to go the distance in November.

By continuing to work together we can achieve great victories this year -- protecting Republican seats and electing new members to the House of Representatives, State Assembly and State Senate!

I am proud to be a California Republican and look forward to working with you in the weeks and months to come.  Thank you for the time and effort you generously donate to help our party.

Very respectfully yours,

STEVE POIZNER
Insurance Commissioner
