VOSD: Holstein Wraps up on his Support for DeMaio

Alex Holstein wraps up the D5 debate at VoSD's Cafe San Diego with a rebuttal post....
It has been an interesting two days of discussion on the District 5 race. There are several big reasons why Carl DeMaio emerges as the clear choice for District 5.
1. San Diego's Watchdog: As he has been for many years, Carl DeMaio will be the taxpayer's watchdog on the City Council to expose waste, fight corruption, and get city finances and services back on track.
2. A Record of Reform: Unlike most first-time candidates, DeMaio has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments in reforming San Diego City Hall--including the passage of Prop B (Pension Reform) and Prop C (Managed Competition) in 2006. He will continue to work within and outside the system to achieve real reform.
3. Real Solutions: DeMaio has articulated comprehensive solutions for the most pressing problems facing the City--including balancing the budget, reforming the pension, rebuilding city infrastructure, enhancing public safety, and restoring ethics and accountability to City Hall. We desperately need a leader at City Hall with bold solutions.
4. Deep Community Support: DeMaio has been walking the district for hours every day since July 1, 2007--and he's reached over 13,000 homes. On his website, he has listed over 1,000 endorsements from District 5 residents. His campaign has some of the deepest grassroots support I have seen in a local race in a long time. With his commitment to have a district office and his grassroots style, he will continue the responsive and personal service District 5 deserves from their councilmember.
5. Courage and Independence: As he has done in the past, DeMaio is not afraid to speak truth to power. He has taken on big labor and big business in exposing corruption and sweetheart deals at the taxpayers' expense. Take a look at what is happening in this campaign. By not bowing to the demands of the powerful municipal labor unions, DeMaio is taking heat. This is exactly the kind of courage and independence we want in a councilmember.

I guess the most important reason to vote for Carl DeMaio has been best made by the opposition itself over the past two days here at Cafe San Diego. My posts on Monday focused exclusively on DeMaio's record as a government watchdog and his ideas for solving the city's financial problems. Not a negative word was said about DeMaio's opponent.
In stark contrast, George George's union friends have savagely attacked DeMaio on a personal level on this blog and in scurrilous emails for weeks. The unions cannot compete with DeMaio's record, his independence, or his solutions for the city's problems. So they have resorted to unsubstantiated accusations, the kind of which would make Mike Aguirre proud! It leads to a key question: is this the sort of behavior George George will condone at City Hall?
The public is sick of in-fighting and unsubstantiated personal attacks. Indeed, the public craves leadership and a focus on solutions to the city's pressing problems.
DeMaio's response to the nasty attacks against him personally reveals something important about how he will tackle the city's problems. Instead of getting distracted or caving in to pressure, he is doing what he always has done when the special interests have attacked him: He's showing standing up for what is right. And he is staying focused on the issues that matter to San Diegans such as balancing the budget, reforming the pension, rebuilding our infrastructure, etc.
Put simply, DeMaio represents real leadership for change at City Hall. San Diego will benefit from DeMaio's leadership and integrity as District 5's next City Councilman and as the Taxpayers' Watchdog on the City Council!

No one has made an issue of DeMaio's homosexuality. In a way this is good, but I think it needs to be considered, especially if this council seat will serve as the launching ground to higher elected office....for a "conservative republican". Many of DeMaio's supporters are "log cabin" republicans with homo-sympathetic pasts such as Holstein...a former pro-canibus activist from the gay community. (He was director of Americans for Access)
Are these the people true conservatives want representing us? Can Holstein even be considered a truly conservative blogger, or a pusher of the pro-gay agenda, liberal in an elephant suit, diluting our message?
Your facts are completely off. Alex is happily married and is a proud father. he is not gay.

Finally, DeMaio isn't getting Log Cabin support. He isn't even endorsed by that group. And the gay political group SDDC has attacked DeMaio for being "unacceptale" and "dangerous" to the gay agenda because he doesn't have a gay agenda.

And the work Alex did for Americans for Access was a states rights issue. Last time i look, states right to make there own laws was a Republican issue.
OK, lets see who's smearing the facts. SDDC is a "gay political group"? Only to someone who doesn't pay attention to the facts. SDDC stands for "San Diego Democratic Club". And by the way, just like DeMaio and Holstein, their platform issue is access to medical marijuana...a real "republican" issue.
And DeMaio doesn't get their endorsement? First, Patrick Sammon, longtime head of the log cabins is one of DeMaio's prominent financial backers. And regarding endorsement, below is a link to an article where James Vaughn, western region director of the Log Cabin Republicans states their support for Demaio (paragraph #9).

We need to be cautious of electing "states rights" republicans who use the party to vocalize marijuana and gay marriage, but are silent when it comes to issues like centralized government, freedom of religion and taxation - Since it seems DeMaio is council bound, I can only hope that this isn't what these two plan to do.
Oh, and by the way, Governor Jim McGreevey and Senator Larry Craig were also "happily married".
Yes, San Diego Democratic Club is a gay political group. Check out their website you idiot. Medical marijuana is one issue they pursue, but it is all about gay agenda. And the fact that they don't like DeMaio just reinforces the point you don't seem to get...DeMaio doesn't have a "gay agenda" as you claim.

Stop with the red herring arguments Demaio. 1st, SDDC isn't against you because you "don't have a gay agenda", they're against you because you're a "republican". It's their JOB!!!
2nd, I never accused Holstein of being gay. I don't know what he does in his bedroom. I accused both you and him of being social liberals, leading this party towards the gay agenda. I don't need to know that Holstein spends his weekend smoking joints in his mother's garage to say that he's pushing the marijuana agenda down our throats while screaming "federalism"...but I never heard you question that!
And I've been in the room when a reporter asked you "what is your position on gay marriage". I heard your answer "the people have spoken". That reporter asked you a second time about your personal opinion, and you would only repeat the same answer. It doesn't engender much confidence from TRUE conservatives to hear an answer like that.
I know you'll beat George George, and fiscally, you may do a good job, but I'll also let every real conservative I know, know exactly who you are, and to think twice before making you our standard bearer. Oh, and regarding Holstein, when you get into office, leave him at the curb. Take a look at his record of sinking candidates. I don't expect you to trust me, so next time you meet with the chairman of the California Republican Party, ask him what he thinks of Holstein.
Hey Carl, I saw on the news where a camera caught you trespassing onto George George's property to block his campaign sign. Did Holstein tell you to do that...or was he the lackey next to you in the video? Sad.

Common people, republicans need to unite. Who gives a rip about the guy who write the article. I'm concerned about the person I have to vote for. That article link was a little scary though. I know Demaio has lots of endorsements, but has anyone addressed this log cabin republican thing? Has Demaio indicated what kind of social stuff he will push on the city council? I know for a fact that Carl called Sanders before Sanders signed on to support the amicus brief for gay marriage, and urged him not to do it.
That doesn't sound like someone who is going to push the gay agenda to me.
