Redistricting Reform Picks Up Three More Endorsements!

The California Voters FIRST Act, which would reform California's redistricting process and put the power to choose their elected officials back in the hands of voters, picked up three more endorsements from California Forward, the Los Angeles Daily News and the Fresno Bee this week.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Daily News strongly supported the measure saying, "a commendable effort is under way to end the self-serving system of California's legislators drawing their own electoral districts." The paper added that "the plan is a vast improvement over the indefensible corruption that's crippled this state for so long." They concluded by encouraging Californians to take action to put it on the ballot, writing:
"Supporters need to collect 1 million signatures by April 15 to put the measure on the November ballot. We should all do our part by signing one of these petitions. The people of California deserve a chance to vote on a new redistricting plan. And if we wait on the Legislature to give us one, we're never going to get it."
Yesterday, the Fresno Bee agreed and also encouraged readers to sign the petition to put the California Voters FIRST Act on the ballot in an editorial headlined "California Voters Should Support Redistricting Ballot Measure." The paper called the initiative "fundamental change in how legislative districts are drawn" and said it would " make state lawmakers more accountable to voters and result in more thoughtful public policy."
And, California Forward, a bipartisan nonprofit organization working for more effective state governance, also threw its support behind the measure. The group says, "California's process for electing public officials does not ensure the public interest is reflected in the candidates who are chosen or the public decisions they make."
