Wither County District 4

Election night downtown I heard some talk about County Supervisorial District 4, currently held by Republican Ron Roberts. Roberts, who has demonstrated some interest in moving into a position that deals with the growing west coast trade with China, was re-elected in 2006 by a wide margin. There was virtually no campaign, as Councilwoman Toni Atkins, who represents the heavily gay 3rd council district, chose not to run against Roberts.

So there are now two theories as to how this will shake down if Roberts decides not to run again. The first theory is that Roberts will resign mid-term, allowing his peers to pick the next 4th District Supervisor. Since there are five Republicans on the Board, the individual picked would likely be a Republican. This matters, since the seat leans Democrat. Presumably (at least according to downtown wisdom) this appointment would give the new Supervisor a 'leg up' in 2010 when he or she would be forced to run for the seat.

The second theory, and a less popular one, is that Roberts would simply leave the old-fashioned way: by not running for office again. This causes an immediate problem: City Councilwoman Donna Frye has already expressed intent to run for the seat should it open, and given the make-up of the district might be a formidable candidate.

Any rumors as to who would have the inside track on a Supe appointment in the event Roberts resigns after the half way mark?

These is some talk of Marla Marshall one of the Sheriff's aides.

I share her name, but not her politics!

Can anyone give us the breakdown of the district? The thought of Donna FRYE on the council makes me shiver.

The REAL Donna

I'm a Republican and all but Im not sure letting the Board of Supervisors appoint someone is the right thing to do. They should put it to an election.

It's this kind of nonsense that makes me believe we should have term limits at every level.

The Evil Party & the Dumb Party said:

Thats why the Dems are the evil party and we are the dumb party. they understand grabbing and holding on to power at all costs while we try to do 'whats right'.

Look, it even rolls down to jobs. Look at the city council where I work. The Republicans hire Democrats. Can anyone name more than say 2 Republicans that have been hired by Democrat council members? No. Of course not. They understand the rules and stick together.

I think the poster above should change his comment to say "the smart party and the dumb party".

Hey is Steve Cushman still one of your stalwarts, boys, or is ours? Councilman Jim Madaffer? Lori Holt Phieler up in Escondido?
