BREAKING NEWS: Democrat Councilman Peters IN for City Attorney

Posted by: Hiram Johnson | 02/02/2008 10:40 AM

Scott Peters.jpg

Democrat Councilman may not have formally announced that he is in the running for City Attorney, but he is in fact running. He has interviewed at least one treasurer and at least two campaign managers in the last week. In his conversations it's not "if" he runs but "he is running". He is also touting a poll that claims he beats sitting City Attorney Mike Aguirre head to head, which is not exactly on point since wiith several candidates in the running the race will hardly be head to head.

By the time a candidate gets to the point of hiring a manager there is no doubt that he is going to pull the trigger. I don't think I'm jumping the gun: Peters is in.

Really? Scott Peters? Give me a break. The current councilmemebers are delusional if they think they can run for office again. This is exactly the kind of out-of-touch move that gives Aguire just the kind of foil he needs to win re-election.

Who would get the Democrat or Labor endorsements? Peters or Aguirre? Or neither? Or split?

What, Goldstmith wouldn't promise Peters a job either?

What this development reveals is the weakness in Team Goldsmith's out-of-the-gate strategy. If Jan had looked stronger and been more aggressive (and he should have been because he clearly has the résumé to justify his candidacy), then these defective wannabe's would be standing down. There is no reason for Bersin to sit out now. His debilitations are no worse than the rest of this sorry bunch.

I Miss John Witt said:

GOP Watcher: I can think of a very good reason for Bersin to sit out---he might win. Casey weakened and Aguirre demolished the House that Witt Built. The office under Witt was a model municipal law office, and it is now in tatters.

Whoever wins is going to have to rebuild a huge law office from virtually nothing. I admire anyone for trying, but I could easily see Bersin thinking he has other things to do than fight his way into a crowded field where the prize is an incredibly difficult and likely thankless job.

Tom Thumb said:

Can Goldsmith win with GOP money only? There is a question. Does he have personal money he can put in? I thought I heard somewhere he was rich?

Right now I (AND I CANT BELIEVE IM WRITING THIS) might give a slight edge to Mainshine just because he has the money.

Peters "strongly considering" run at city attorney
San Diego Council President Scott Peters responded to a published web report Saturday, saying that he is "strongly considering" challenging Michael Aguirre in the city attorney's race.
A local blog, redcounty.com, predicted Peters would run based on meetings he's taken with prospective campaign advisers.
Peters answered the speculation quickly, via an e-mail to John Kaheny, an Aguirre critic who has followed developments in the City Attorney's Office closely. Kaheny's regular e-mails circulate among other Aguirre foes and he forwarded Peters' response.
Peters acknowledged that he had previously decided not to run against Aguirre, but said a number of people have been trying to draw him in, "believing that I would be good at the job and that I would win," according to the Kaheny e-mail.
He said he would not make up his mind until the middle of the month. Aguirre has four current challengers, including a judge, Jan Goldsmith, and another council member, Brian Maienschein.
Peters and a spokeswoman did not return calls regarding the e-mail.

Here also is the link to the first U-T post following Hiram Johnson breaking the story here on Red County this morning...

http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/news/breaking/2008/02/peters_strongly_considering_ru.html

These are not from Chris Reed's America's Finest Blog - http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/weblogs/afb/ - as noted in the prior comment, they are part of the U-T Newsroom's Newsblog.

But, the bottom-line is essential: Red County breaks the story again, the U-T does follow-up based on the story here. This time, the U-T gives credit, unlike on the Maienschein story.

I am guessing the GOPers are finally figuring out that Peters is in for real. We knew about two weeks ago. Peters was already spreading the word through party ranks and union ranks that he was in it but no one really cares since its becoming so crowded so it wasn't picked up in SD Politico or other Dem blogs. Good to see this blog pick it up so we can see what a fun circus horserace this is. I am putting my money on some unknown like Coffey or Lee to somehow get the second and last spot in the run off even though they don't deserve it but I think it is likely since Brian, Scott, Jan and Mike will be beating each other to a pulp.

Peters isn't a bad guy. Pretty moderate. Anyway, the role of City Attorney shouldn't be political, it shouldn't even be an elected office!

Oh Please Give Me A Break!!

Peters voted for every bit of the garbage that gave us the fiscal crisis.

Oh, and yeah, how did he vote on discriminating against Walmart? All in favor!

Shouldnt be elected? You want the clowns we have in the city council appointing the city attorney? give me a break!

Phoobar said:

Neither Peters, nor Goldsmith, nor Mainschein will win it in the primary; that means that in the general, which will be far more "progressive" than the primary, especially if Obama is the D nominee, whoever comes in second to Aguirre will get clobbered.

Old news said:

Actually SD politico had some posts about it for the past few weeks and the comments had some stuff on it too. I mean this stuff was like in late October/early November...

Street Cred said:

There have been rumors that Peters might run, carried in various forums, but the post above is different in that it has credibility. Meaning -- it sources actual conversations Peters is having that are steps that only someone who is actually already running would take.
