AD78 Watch: You Can't Ignore Her Forever

The Democrats in the 78th Assembly District, and in the State Assembly, want anything but for Maxine Sherard to be the nominee in 2008. Shocking, since she has a $3 million name ID head start on any other candidate, but over and over it becomes more apparent.
First it was the knee-jerk reaction to any mention of a possible 4th Sherard run at the seat. They called it a hoax and said the right was trying to bait her into the race... and then she pulled papers.
Second, a candidate of her stature entering the race would be big news anywhere, but the only place it got any pub was on this blog.
Third, the group Progressive San Diego recently announced its endorsements through the primary election. They chose to endorse Marty Block and Arlie Ricasa. Not surprisingly, they chose not to endorse former Republican activist Auday Arabo. But leaving Sherard out of their endorsements seems a bit suspicious. If you will recall the 06 election, Maxine is so far left she could accurately be dubbed post-progressive. So why not endorse another true progressive in the race - especially one that can win the general?
And now, the Eastlake-Bonita Democratic Club is hosting a forum for the candidates in the 78th Assembly District Democratic primary. Auday Arabo will be there. So will Marty block and Arlie Ricasa. How about Maxine? There is no mention of her even being invited or why, if she was invited, she cannot attend. It is also re-listed on the SD County Democratic website in the same manner.
The Democrats decided to respond vehemently to any mention of a possible Sherard run months ago. Now that she is in the race, they refuse to utter her name.
None of this surprises me. Like I have said before, the Democrats do not want Maxine Sherard as their nominee. They view the 78th as rightfully a Democratic seat, and the only race in the district this year will be the race in the primary. Their preference would be to have Marty Block or Arlie Ricasa who would toe the line and not make waves.
Say what you will, but Sherard says what is on her mind regardless of the popular party position. She would also be another vote for the Black Caucus in Sacramento, which is not something the establishment wants to see become stronger. This all translates into a headache for the powers that be in the Democratic Party, a headache they are postponing by not acknowledging her candidacy.
But at 8:00pm on June 3rd, they are going to have a migraine to deal with, and a whole lot of crow to eat.

You've got to be kidding me!
The guy made $50 Million in one year and he brought in a Real Estate agent who worked for Bill Jones! Bill Jones Senate Campaign dropped faster than the Real Estate market in San Diego!
With that kind of money, I would have thought a Jimmy Camp, Mike Richmand or Chip Englander would be brought in.
Well, i guess we really will find out if money alone can win a race.
Disregard post above, i meant to put it on the Francis thread.
Typical democrates, party of the people until the people want to have their own voice. Then they shun them.
two words...John McCann
John McCann....John McCain. McCain's high favorables with DTS will help McCann. I would be willing to bet the Johns have the same kind of yard sign.
Now with Maxine in the race the Republicans are caughting all the breaks.
Would an Obama candidacy, along with Sherard's name recognition, impact voters enough to overcome the advantage McCann has due to the name similarity with John McCain, or do her three previous attempts at the seat poison the well? Discuss.
Sherard OH Sherard. Maybe this could be her year...this could also be the year the Heaven's Gate cult returns to Earth after riding the coat tails of that comet around the galaxy.
Not to discount the Democrats. This will be a contentious race no matter whom they throw up against McCann. As mentioned above perhaps the tide of liberal love for a woman nominee or a black nominee could help her ride the waves to victory.
Either way, we know she is entirely beatable as was demonstrated in previous cycles and in 2006 by Stephen Puetz and his top notch team.
While it has been established that Sherard is beatable, it is important not to dismiss this upcoming race as a given victory, with or without Sherard. Horton won by 5% in 2006 under the Puetz team, her largest margin to date. No one has any doubt that the Hansen 2008 team, successors from the 2006 race, can recreate that victory for John McCann, so long as everyone maintains the focus on the race and gives McCann and his campaign team the support they need. Discuss.
