La Suer Eying Sheriff's Seat?

Posted by: Barry Jantz | 01/16/2008 8:00 AM

Jay La Suer.jpgIs the former "number two" at the Sheriff's Department eying the seat?  Jay La Suer, also the immediate past 77th AD assemblyman and prior to that a 10-year member of the La Mesa City Council, is said to be doing just that.  Once considered a possible contender for Duncan Hunter's open congressional seat, La Suer has endorsed Hunter son Duncan D. for the spot.  Short of waiting for an open senate seat from a termed-out Dennis Hollingsworth, the one-time undersheriff has few prospects if interested in another office.

Roger Hedgecock raised the idea of "top cop" La Suer on his radio program last week and, according to show producer Jimmy Valentine, Jay didn't rule out the possibility:

Roger issues a challenge on the radio this week. Sez we need a new sheriff. It's unlikely that Bill Kolender will run again so we'll get a new sheriff but the boss thinks we need a new breed of sheriff. Enough of the old boy, pass the baton crap. A fresh face who will serve the community and not just the department insiders and buds. And a sheriff who will grant carry permits to well trained, law abiding citizens as the law allows.

After that comment Roger begins getting emails from listeners mostly agreeing. We get an email from former State Assemblyman Jay La Suer who comments on the 2nd amendment right and we write back that he ought to run for the job. Jay is a former lawman. He is a military vet. A great family man and a wonderful Grandpa. And he is a staunch constitutionalist. Jay responds that such a possibility might not be out of the question and so Roger is now actively recruiting Jay to be a candidate.

We know that Jay will work with federal officials on the border and on anti-terror efforts. He won't build a fence around his bureaucracy and he won't order a department helicopter not to drop water on a fire because it is suddenly sunset. Watch this space and prepare to roll up your sleeves again.

Some say the "downtown establishment" (do they carry membership cards?) and Deputy Sheriffs Association would never "allow" anyone but their annointed choice as Sheriff.  Current Undersheriff Bill Gore?  Of course, Bill Kolender may still run.  And, what of Jim Duffy?

What do you readers think?

Countywide office is very expensive. By that I mean several hundred thousand dollars for a Sheriff's race.

Ryan said:

It would be worth the expense. Kolender and his ilk have got to go. If Kolender does run again it'll be to win, retire and have the board of supervisors appoint his second-in-command as Sheriff.

It would be nice if non-connected citizens could get CCWs as easily as Bill's cronies.

No offense to Mr. La Suer but we need an active Sheriff with the experience to lead. It seems to me that Jim Duffy will provide that type of leadership. He has been born and bred for it.

I have know Jay La Suer since the early 70's while in the Sheriff's Dept. He would be an excellent Sheriff and believes in the 2nd admendment.

What about former SD police chief David Bejarano?

Please Explain: Some History Please said:

Anyone with any even mildy neutral history of the sheriff's office. I recall that LaSuer was a Roach man (the last sheriff) so I'm guessing there is no love lost with him and the current officeholder. This is a GUESS.

Why did Roach get knocked out of the office btw?

Michael J. Sindelar said:

Although I no longer live in California and this issue doesn't directly affect me I am concerned about the quality of life in San Diego County for friends and family. Jay LaSuer would make a great Sheriff based on his knowledge, beliefs and commitment to the PEOPLE of San Diego County and not just the chosen few. His abilities and governing philosophies must appeal to more than just a few. Every office he has held he has been elected and re-elected to. If he runs I will contribute to his campaign on behalf of wanting better and more responsive county government for the people of San Diego County.

H. A. Beard, Jr. said:

In response to Please Explain....Yes, Mr. La Suer, IS and
WAS a Roach disciple. I think we all know how that turned
out. The Sheriff's Department does not need another
"Experimentation in Leadership." Jim Duffy would be ready
on---Day One.

"...Jim Duffy...born and bred for it."

Pretentious tripe - this is America, we honor inividual acheivement, not hereditary titles (who is this - the Sheriff of Nottingham?).

Based on personal acheivement and experience, Jay is the only candidate for the job.

Anyone who has seen sheriff Kolender lately ever get the impression you are watching a real life rendition of "Weekend at Bernie’s?"

Bill in SD said:

Who better to run the Sheriff's office than Jay LaSuer?

He has experience on both sides of the office that the others don't. He will get things done, and I bet he will turn down driving those Dodge Charger SR/T cars that the current staff are so used to driving......

duffy for sheriff said:

jim duffy has 26+ yrs law enforcement, and has lived his whole life preparing for the role of sheriff, and is a great leader. He would be a great force in the administration as sheriff and would surely get the county great results! His work in the past has been excellent. Great job so far Duffy. Keep it up.

jim duffy, or jay lasuer need to be sure to step up to the plate. both are excellent choices.
dumanis has already choosen and its bill gore, kolenders guy. this public should make this decsion not dumanis, or her gop puppets.

In my mind there is only one choice for Sheriff----Jim Duffy. He would bring his considerable experience and forward thinking to bear. If you look at the others, both Gore and La Suer's time has come and gone. Both need to retire------FOR GOOD! Gore is an FBI hack and La Suer is associated with one of the most miserable Sheriff Administrations in San Diego History. DUFFY FOR SHERIFF! FAMILIAR NAME....NEW IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Otto VonAuchvetter said:

The new sheriff will be elected stgritly on whether or not he will allow Concealed Weapns Permits. The general public are getting tired of cowering in their homes. Then too, an out of state concealed weapons permits should be enouhgh of a reason to issue locally.

Question for Habeard Jr. said:

what do you mean by calling an honorable FBI agent an "FBI hack" exactly

Jacquelyn Coyle said:

I will keep it simple and short. I will do anything and everything I
can do to keep this As******* from ever becoming Sheriff!!!! You
wanna give this widow a call Duffy?????
Go for it!!!!!!

Jacquelyn,
