Congressman Jerry Lewis: Event Recap

Per my previous posts, the University of Redlands College Republicans hosted Congressman Jerry Lewis (R-CA) last night here on campus.
The event was a huge success- with hundreds of students and members of the public gathering to hear him speak. He spent the first half of his speech talking about himself- and sharing that he actually was going to run for elected office as a Democrat until a trip abroad in college changed his philosophical outlook on life.
The latter end of his speech was open Q and A- and he took on some really engaging and tough questions- and very eloquently at that. Mr. Lewis addressed various issues such as open borders, pollution, the economy, unemployment, and of course- earmarks.
His justification of earmarks consists of 1. they are Constitutional 2. they make up less than 1/10 of 1% of the entire federal budget (thus, would it really even make a difference to abolish them?) and lastly, 3. if Congressmembers didn't bring those dollars back home, they'd go right into the hands of bureaucrats, who of course are not elected by the people.
Myself and fellow club members, along with others who helped put on the event, then joined the Congressman, his wife, and President of the University of Redlands Dr. Dorsey for a dessert reception up at the alumni house.
The event was a huge success and we were honored to be able to host the Congressman. He is a public servant in every sense of the word and this district, community, and University would not be what it is today without him.
There is much debate as to when he may or may not retire, but for the sake of the public, I sincerely hope he plans on serving a few more terms.
