Sad news from Illinois today as conservative stalwart and pro-life champion Henry Hyde passed away today at the age of 83. Hyde, a highly respected United States Congressman for thirty years until his retirement in 2006, was a fighter for human rights, the sanctity of all life, and an unabashed supporter of legislation protecting taxpayers from financing abortion on demand.
Here are comments from San Bernardino County Republican Congressman David Dreier on the passing of the Honorable Henry Hyde:
"The passing of Henry Hyde is a great loss for America, for the House of Representatives, and for those of us who had the privilege of knowing him and serving with him. He was a leader in so many ways. Henry Hyde was perhaps the most patriotic American I have ever met. He believed in this country and he always fought for what he believed was best for it. The House was blessed to have a Member so tireless in his devotion to his work here, especially the Judiciary Committee. Henry was known for his great speeches and he articulated his beliefs so eloquently. He never shied from a debate, but he always conducted them as a gentleman, with respect and humor.
"Henry Hyde was more than a highly principled leader, orator, and thinker, he was the funniest, most loyal friend anyone could possibly want. I will miss him dearly. His wife Judy, his children, and his entire family are in my thoughts and prayers today."
Congressman Hyde served in the House from 1975-2006. On November 5, 2007, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. The Medal of Freedom represents the highest civilian award the President can bestow on distinguished Americans.
