Chris Jones: Kelley Supports Clark
Posted by: Joseph Turner | 10/05/2007 12:27 AM
Robert Rogers of the San Bernardino Sun recently reported on his blog that Councilman Chas Kelley and Councilwoman Wendy McCammack are privately supporting the candidacy of Joseph Turner for City Clerk.
Chris Jones, consultant for Kelley and McCammack, responded to this report refuting the assertion that Kelley is supporting Turner. Jones also contends that Kelley did not vote to endorse Turner at the recent San Bernardino Valley Republican Assembly meeting.
Jones asserts that Kelley left the spot blank.
This is very puzzling. First, Chris Jones was not present at this meeting. It is clear that Jones is not familiar with the voting process of the SBVRA.
Each candidate seeking the body's endorsement has three boxes next to their name. Members can vote to endorse, vote to oppose and vote to take no action. It would make absolutely no sense for Kelley to leave his ballot blank in Turner's race. Clearly, if he is endorsing Clark, he should have voted to oppose the endorsement and at the very least voted to take no action.
Either of those votes would have prevented me from obtaining the unanimous endorsement. However, my endorsement was unanimous. Further, I unofficially observed the ballot count while others on the SBVRA board counted the ballots.
There is absolutely no credibility with Jones and the Kelley/Jones team. Robert Rogers reports that Kelley maintains that he doesn't recall whether or not he signed my anti-illegal immigration initiative.
That's funny, here he is in the San Francisco Chronicle after a reporter interviewed him in his home:
"This initiative is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that you're not seeing in the federal government," said Kelley, sitting in his tidy tract home on Varsity Avenue. "If you can't rent apartments here, you can't put your kids in our schools, and that leaves more time for the kids who speak English."
"Doggone it, get them to raise their right hands and swear allegiance to this country and get to be citizens with their allegiances to this country," Kelley says. "They should acclimate to this country and speak English."
Kelley believes the initiative will pass by a large margin. Citizens, he said, are fed up. "That's where we're at now, to the boiling point," he said.
Here is Chas Kelley in USA Today:
Kelley said the measure "makes sense" and he'll vote for it today to avoid an election
Here is Chas Kelley on CNN's Lou Dobbs:
CHAS KELLEY, SAN BERNARDINO CITY COUNCIL: I'm going to vote for this initiative to be implemented. And if that fails, I will vote to send it to the voters.
And I can go on and on with the numerous other news articles and television appearances he made. You would think that based on these comments, on the fact that I have known him for 10 years and that I have walked for him on his campaigns when his own family wouldn't that he would remember. However, he claims to have no recollection.
Well, I have the petition sheets that Chas Kelley signed...yes, I said sheets (as in plural), laying right next to me. Perhaps, I should scan them in and post them. You see, not only did Chas Kelley sign the initiative, he also gathered a handful of signatures and signed as a petition circulator. In fact, he signed my initiative THREE times (once as a signatory, and twice as a circulator).
It reminds me of the old quip: "How do you know when a politician is lying?" "His lips are moving."
Clearly, Chas Kelley and others who have openly endorsed my opponent agree with me on illegal immigration. Neil Derry has expressed outrage over Wal-Mart and other businesses not collecting the sales tax revenue.
I am committed to cracking down on absentee slumlords, unlicensed rental properties and unregistered group homes. Each and every one of those positions are solid, worthwhile positions.
So, what is the real story for why these members are supporting incumbent Rachel Clark and her record of neglect and mismanagement?

Clearly, you have the evidence that Chas Kelley is conviently forgetting. Chas, look at the evidence and refresh your memory. Tell the truth. I imagine its too late now to tell the truth, hopefully, it won't cost you in the election. For whatever reason your handlers chose to direct you in this downward spiral of lies.
Obviously his "handler" isn't as amazing as he thinks he is. Kelley balked and blew it on this one. He needs to come out and clear the air before this "scandal" gets too long in the tooth. People don't like a liar represnting them. Don't you think, Mr. Kelley, that the people of the 5th ward and the city of San Bernardino deserve the truth or are you too busy drinking the water at City Hall to care.
Again, I see the argument that if there were no children of illegal immigrants in our schools (many who are US citizens) that there would be smaller class sizes and a better focus on English, this concept is crazier that the sbschoolboard website a few crackpots have put up! Anybody who knows anything about how school receive funds know that it is based on enrollment, lower the enrollment, less money, less teachers and I’m sure the class sizes will be the same. San Bernardino needs to just focus on getting rid of gangs, drug dealers, violent x-felons in parole houses and the like to clean up the city. Not hard working people who are here just trying to make a living. Instead of focusing on who is a registered landlord or not, (I thought us republicans were for less government) condemning and fining properties that are not to code! Don’t we have code enforcement in this city? Why don’t we let them enforce! Unfortunately sometimes rhetoric that wins elections that are not even close to solving the problems of the city that we all agree on needs to be fixed.
Hey Joe!
It is ok for Chas to change his mind, I thought Joe was a jerk, now I think he is an idiot for being upset at an elected official. Why do we break the 11th commandment here? Hey Joe, all the links to your news articles are dead on your candidate website. Time to stir up something new!
There's a difference in "changing your mind" and refusing to acknowledge what you've done in the past. Clearly, if Chas changed his mind he would have said so. Instead he says "I don't remember" All I can say is "WEAK".
Bama Boy:
This should be fun. Please humor me and state the 11th Commandment.
By the way, I don't control the SB Sun linking system. There are going to be a ton of dead links on this blog as well. After 14 days or so, the paper changes their linking structure.
Ronald Reagan’s 11th commandment is as sacred as the first 10 ”Thou shalt not speak ill of any other republican" I just long for the good old days when we were civil!
Bama Boy:
I didn't draw first blood. I think you need to talk to these other Republicans speaking ill of me.
I am not exactly sure why it is that you are holding me to a standard different from the one you hold these other individuals.
I have my own 11th Commandment:
"Never turn the other cheek..."
Darn! I do agree with you on that one Joe, I do believe Neil Derry should not be running for BOS. I agree many other Republicans are very guilty of tearing each other down. We sound like democrats. What a pity. Shame on them! I guess I will invite them hunting next time Dick Cheney invites me!
I would have preferred nothing more than to have had the public support of these councilmembers.
Hell, I would have been happy if they stayed out of the race entirely. Instead, they endorsed my opponent while slamming me repeatedly via press releases.
I am simply not going to sit on my hands and not respond. If someone thought that was going to happen, they obviously do not know me well enough and miscalculated.
While I can appreciate your position and understanding on the issue of Republicans challenging other Republicans, I am curious to get a more in depth perspective from you on this matter.
I am not really interested in debating Derry v. Hansberger, per se. However, there are instances where an incumbent Republican may be a RINO or may be simply not as good as the challenger.
My question to you is do you believe that a GOPer should never run against a GOPer? What is your criteria for when it is acceptable?
Bama Boy needs a history lesson. It was Dennis Hansberger who early endorsed Liberal Democrat Patrick Morris over Republican Chas Kelley for Mayor. Hansberger has never let the best interests of the Republican Party stop him from undermining our candidates.
Well now that the Tide rolled over Houston, I am in a better mood; I know you are wishing USC played the SB Cardinals not the Cardinal from Stanford today. Where I am from, its very simple to shake a mans hand, look him in the eye, and take him for his word. As long as an incumbent has not committed a crime, has upheld the values of the GOP, as well as works to solve problems with others and that of Democrats to solve problems to make where we live a better place. I say, why challenge them? If a crime has been committed, like arrested in a bathroom for sexual solicitation, or forcing lobbying firms to hire relatives or give large donations to make legislation go through. I say then challenge away. Otherwise, if we can agree with our people 95% keep them in. But no! We focus on the 5% that we don’t agree with them and then find someone to challenge a fellow GOPer like you say. I hope this clears up my criteria for you.
History buff, where was the uproar when Jerry Lewis supported Mayor Morris with a $5,000 check and outright endorsement along with Joe Baca? Did our biggest party big wigs feel that Chas was not up to being Mayor or did they read the polls?
Bama Boy:
A large number of Republicans were disappointed by Lewis' endorsement of Morris as well. But you raise a hypocritical question...why should Republicans continue to support incumbent Republicans who regularly do not support the Party's candidates?
And why is their incumbency saccrosanct if their actions have violated the basic principles of the party.
Bama Boy obviously thinks incumbency is more important than loyalty, principles, and the best interests of the Country...the very reasons Republicans lost Congress.
If the only reason to challenge an incumbent Republican is whether or not he committed a crime, than Republicans have no future that the public will trust us with.
Last time I checked, Lewis and Hansberger endorsed before a poll was ever done...
I agree that commiting a crime is not the only reason for rid of someone. I purposefully made the statement "upheld the values of the GOP" as this is vague enough to say get rid of a guy that raises our taxes, is pro-abortion, or whatever. A minority party must get along with the majority to try to get something positive through. Well I guess better that then being an obstructionist. opps too late. Its funny when you ask an incumbant GOPer why do they support a Democrat or ask a DEM why they support a GOPer... Generally you will get the DeFacto answer of "we all have to work together" with their uncomfortable look on their face.
SB teach,
The funds you speak of, ADA(average daily attendance), hasn't done a thing to improve education; NCLB hasn't either. If that were the case, we would not have to import workers (visa holders) for every job under the sun! We would have our own educated citizens to fill the jobs in education, tech, and medical fields, just to name a few.
Regarding your statement "many are U.S. citizens" is open for debate. Your statement tells me that it's alright for an illegal alien to cross the border, have a baby 10 minutes later, and that baby is automatically declared a citizen of the U.S.A.? We remain one of the only countries that allow birth right citizenship.
Our 14th amendment was never intended for this purpose. It was a constitutional amendment, drafted after the Civil War. It's sole purpose was to assure that newly emancipated black slaves would never be denied citizenship by the States. It is now being used to make a mockery of our immigration laws. A country who ignores it's laws, or allows them to be corrupted...becomes an anarchy.
You refer to "hard working people just trying to "make a living" when you refer to illegal immigrants? I'm sure some are hard working, they should do it legally, not commit a federal crime the second they set foot in our country! They are also costing
Los Angeles County over $1 billion in services? That figure doesn't even include education!
The SB school board website you call crazy, I find refreshing. They don't just make that stuff up you know. There is this little habit I have, it's called research. They really don't make it up, it's all verifiable.
Code enforcement? We have it, it's just selective enforcement, not all inclusive!
Now, back on topic! I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Kelly should consider taking Ginkgo Biloba, I hear it improves your memory.
History Buff:
You write:
"why should Republicans continue to support incumbent Republicans who regularly do not support the Party's candidates?"
Good question...in light of various Republican members of the San Bernardino City Council endorsing my Democratic opponent.
