"Consultant Extraordinaire" Strikes Again
Posted by: Joseph Turner | 09/04/2007 7:05 PM
Since I am not a political consultant, I am not an expert on the tricks of the trade.
So obviously, I missed the class that painstakingly detailed how to "dust off" and "re-send" an old press release. Take this gem attached below that was submitted by Chris "Consultant Extraordinaire" Jones.
It is a press release announcing that Republican City Council members Tobin Brinker, Neil Derry, Chas Kelley and Wendy McCammack have all endorsed my Democratic opponent, Rachel Clark.
What is striking is that it is "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE". Considering that it is a near verbatim copy of the release that was sent out on August 8th, it is most amusing.
Since the media failed to run with the story in any meaningful way the first time around, despite several different contact numbers being provided, I thought I would throw "CE" a bone and give him some love on Red County.
The press release tries to do a couple of things:
- divide and conquer (even his fellow Republicans oppose him)
- suggest Clark is a capable and effective leader
What is interesting about this press release is the fact that I recently received the unanimous support of the San Bernardino Valley Republican Assembly, of which Councilman Chas Kelley and Councilwoman Wendy McCammack are members. They were present and submitted ballots.
Wendy McCammack publicly stated at the meeting that she was voting for me and I have also been told by Councilman Neil Derry that he is voting for me.
Additionally, Councilman Chas Kelley has endorsed Congressman Joe Baca and San Bernardino City School Board Trustee Teresa Parra. Parra called for giving voting rights to illegal aliens in school board elections and Congressman Baca has called for amnesty and many other benefits for illegal aliens.
Councilman Chas Kelley also endorsed Rikke Van Johnson, a Democrat, when everyone knew that Betty Dean Anderson (a Republican) was going to run again.
So, exactly how much credibility does this press release have to begin with?
Now, let us talk about my opponents job performance.
Chas Kelley writes: "I am proud to support [her]. She is a capable and honest public servant..."
Tobin Brinker writes: "Rachel Clark is doing a good job for the people of San Bernardino."
What is comical is the additional Brinker quote lifted from this blog which reads, "Joe Turner represents the worst inclinations of modern politics."
Actually, Mr. Brinker, the worst inclinations of modern politics are represented by the likes of politicians such as yourself who say one thing one minute to one group of people and the exact opposite to someone else. You have absolutely zero credibility.
You came to a San Bernardino Valley Republican Assembly meeting and told us to our faces that you opposed any sales tax measure that would only require a simple majority for passage. Then you backed Measure Z, which only required 50% plus one to pass.
Then you came onto this blog this weekend and stated that you had received the endorsement of the San Bernardino Valley Republican Assembly when that also was a lie.
Fortunately for Brinker, Chris Jones actually did some editing before he copied Brinker's statement for the press release.
But I digress...
Back to Rachel Clark and her job performance.
There are thousands of unlicensed rental properties in this city containing sexual predators, degenerates and other unsavory characters. I know this because I audited every single sex predator on Megan's Law database and cross-referenced it with the San Bernardino City website containing business license information and the San Bernardino County Tax Collector's website containing ownership information. There are well over one hundred sex predators living in unlicensed rental properties.
And those thousands of unlicensed rental properties represent literally MILLIONS of dollars in lost revenue to the city over the course of her tenure in office.
Finally, there are possibly hundreds of businesses in this city that are not collecting the required sales tax. Most notably, the Wal-Mart on Highland Avenue. For over five months, it and many other businesses have failed to collect the 8% sales tax rate and are still charging the 7.75% rate.
If the City Clerk cannot see to it that one of the largest sales tax revenue sources isn't collecting the appropriate taxes, allows thousands of rental properties to remain unlicensed and has cost the city millions of dollars, she doesn't deserve to be re-elected.
If that is the "job performance" they want to hang their hat on, is it any wonder why the people of this city refuse to give members of the council a pay raise?
EDITOR'S NOTE: The thoughts and opinions expressed in this commentary authored by Red County San Bernardino contributing writer Joseph Turner are those of himself and do not necessarily reflect the views of Red County San Bernardino's editor and members of the site's "blogpen." Furthermore, it should be noted that, as Joseph Turner states in this editorial, he is a candidate for San Bernardino City Clerk.

Joe Turner says that San Bernardino's real problem is that that city doesn't collect enough taxes. I doubt that local Republican voters will agree with that stupid liberal viewpoint!
Since Turner considers me a "Consultant Extraordinaire", I'll go out on a limb and predict that he LOSES the election for City Election by a margin of greater than 2 to 1.
Oh, since Turner is so into typos, I'll correct my last sentence to read:
Since Turner considers me a "Consultant Extraordinaire", I'll go out on a limb and predict that he loses the election for City Clerk by a margin of greater than 2 to 1.
Happy losing trails Joe!
Chris:
I am puzzled. For someone who is going to lose by a margin "greater than 2 to 1", you and your clients sure do spend a lot of time on me.
Why all the song and dance for a candidate that is going down in flames?
And interestingly enough, you did not respond to the facts that I presented and simply relied on red herrings, spin and completely refused to address my key points.
I'll enumerate them so that they are easy to follow:
1. Three of the four Republicans on your list have explicitly or implicitly endorsed me. How do you respond to that?
2. Do you and the Republicans you represent believe that having thousands of unlicensed rental units is a good thing for this city?
3. Do you and the Republicans you represent believe that all businesses should not have to pay any registration fees?
4. Do you and the Republicans you represent believe that some businesses should be allowed to charge a different sales tax rate than other businesses?
5. Considering that 2 of your 4 Republicans voted to put the increase in sales tax on the ballot, one was on vacation and didn't take a vote for the record and one was not in office but publicly supported it, I find your spin and comment about taxes most amusing.
6. The bigger question is why your candidates oppose my candidacy when my platform is built on the following:
-licensing unlicensed rentals;
-targeting absentee slumlords with loss of business license;
-targeting group homes for registration;
-ensuring that businesses pay the required sales tax revenue.
Wow! I believe the correct response is: “Owned!”

I’ve seen some pretty interesting tactics in my years of observation of politics and I don’t think I have ever seen something as utterly fantastic as this. Turner takes Chris Jones’ attempt at a negative press release, posts it on the blog where he is the primary contributor, twists it into a positive, and serves it up with more fodder on why his opponent is inept. Talk about being completely indifferent to the naysayers… I love it.
Let me help you out Chris. If you actually read the post, Turner doesn’t talk about more taxes at all. I am sure you were probably just seeing so much red after reading the “Consultant Extraordinaire” part that you just skipped directly to the reply portion and forgot the silly details like the actual argument he was making in response to your press release. It is simply saying that he believe his opponent is not holding people accountable to the taxes and licensure requirements already established by the City.
Next, let’s talk about obligations. I think it would be very interesting for the voters of the 5th Ward to find out that your horse in the race, Chas Kelley, declared bankruptcy just before running for Council. If your client can’t even satisfy his personal obligations, how can you justify him being in anyway associated with managing others’ money and satisfying the obligation to the constituency he supposedly serves? Better yet, let’s ask Chas why he sought fit to pay his wife $2,000 from his campaign funds!
You’re right about one thing Chris…bankruptcy, asking the federal government, corporations and debt alleviation agencies to assume debt you accrued is definitely a, “stupid liberal viewpoint.” Maybe you should ask the Republican voters you know so well what they think about someone in public office with access to public monies having a personal bankruptcy and using his campaign funds as an additional source of income for their family.
Just a thought…
By the way editors...you can check that the information I've posted IS accurate but I will be counting down, with pleasure, the minutes until you delete another truthful post of mine.
The reason I've "spent so much time" on Mr. Turner is because his candidacy has the potential to harm the election of other conservative local candidates--as demonstrated by his disastrous run for school board.
I believe it is very important for other Republicans to disassociate themselves from Turner's inflammatory and irresponsible candidacy. Otherwise, he will continue to be the "gift that keeps on giving" to San Bernardino Democrats.
The real problem is not who is endorsing who. The problem is that if Rachel Clark was a "capable and effective leader", then the problems that fall under her jurisdiction, namely absentee landlords and licensing of businesses operating inside the city, would not be such rampant problems. Also, if Walmart is not collecting our city taxes that were SOOOO important, they should be getting fined by the day, they can afford it.
A compotent and effective leader would take the lead on solving issues before they became problems. If the city clerk does not have the tools to do her job, she should go to the city council and get them, we all know that the other administrative elected official does. Well actually he just outsources his job so that he has more time for political pandering. I can say that atleast Rachel Clark stays out of trouble and out of the limelight, but maybe with the growing problems in this city, we need somebody willing to take charge and lead form the front. Good luck Joe.
Chris:
If you are going to stay up until three in the morning to respond to one of my comments, could you at least have the courtesy to respond to the questions that I ask?
Instead, you try to get off another blast in a feeble attempt to demonstrate your political acumen.
But...let's address your comments. I am not afraid to ask and be asked the tough questions, unlike you who continually dodges them.
My candidacy for school board consisted of the following:
purchasing a candidate statement and paying for 500 yard signs, which were promptly torn up within a week of posting.
In that election, 38,000 voters went to the polls and I missed the final spot by 1,700 votes. In other words, I only needed to switch 4.5% of the voters.
Each of the incumbents were funded by the teachers association and sent out mailers to voters.
Perhaps, had I sent out one mailer or at least had the county party send out a slate for all the Republicans running, I think I could have overcome that difference.
But a loss is a loss, I'll grant you that.
If you think that is "disastrous" then I will bow to your superior wisdom.
Interestingly enough, you had no qualms working on Kelley's mayoral campaign that everyone knows took votes away from Penman and assisted ultra liberal Pat Morris in his campaign win.
When you are getting paid, you don't give a damn about advancing conservative ideals.
You once again criticize my campaign platform, but fail to address where your clients stand on the issues I raised?
You once again fail to address the fact that three of the four Republicans on your press release have told me personally that they are voting for me or voted to endorse me at the California Republican Assembly.
But once again, you refuse to answer questions because you simply don't have the "onions" to be in the game. That is why you sit on the sidelines.
Cue the Final Jeopardy music!
Still waiting on some semblance of a response to the questions I have posed.
In the meantime, while you try to conjure up a response, please take a look at the San Bernardino Sun.
I get plenty of coverage in the paper and I do not have to write crappy press releases to get it.
Mr. Turner got loads of press in his last election--and finished 7th out of 8 candidates.
The more voters hear about Turner, the more they realize what a political nutcase he is.
I stand by my earlier prediction, Turner loses the City Clerk's election by a margin of greater than 2 to 1.
You predicted that Chas Kelley had a chance in the mayor's race, too. Maybe it's time to get a new magic 8 ball.
Turner,
It's interesting that none of your supporters use their real names. Probably because they either don't exist or don't want to publicly be associated with you.
A friendly word of advice to you and your imaginary "friends". It really isn't smart to pick unnecessary fights when you are a candidate for political office.
I had not intended to get involved in the City Clerk's race--except to distance my clients from your irresponsible candidacy. However, your continued attacks against me and my clients have changed my attitude and I will now "join the game" to use your phrase. Fortunately, I have secured some significant campaign resources towards this end.
Turner, come November you are going to wish you had kept your mouth shut and focused on winning votes--instead of alienating Republicans. You are going to lose and lose hard.
I personally promise that after November 6, your political future will be about as viable as Larry Craig's.
This is my last transmission until November 7th. Adios MoFO!
"Adios MoFO!"
That is really mature, Chris.
Let me get this straight, you merely tried to "distance [your] clients from [my] irresponsible candidacy"?
If you didn't want to get involved, why do you feel compelled to send out the same press release over and over?
Then you want to take shots at me on this blog, never answer any of the questions I pose and then cry that I am the one picking the fight.
Your problem is that you refuse to support your assumptions and assertions and instead try to change the subject.
I find it interesting that you are going to "join the game" now when for the last month you have been orchestrating the notion that everyone and their mother was going to come out of the woodwork and turn this local race into a national circus, that Mayor Pat Morris was going to use me as a catalyst to raise more money, etc.
I am not a political consultant Chris, but I would think that your public declaration that you have allowed me to get under your skin and get you to act emotionally, rather than in a cool and collected fashion isn't a good thing.
At the end of the day, you orchestrated the attack on me at the outset. Your clients just didn't distance themselves in the press release.
So don't go crying to me when I punch back. If you are going to dish it out, then you better be willing to take it.
Since the start of the campaign, the only thing I have done is see you work to undermine mine.
My suggestion to you is to focus on your clients and to leave me alone. Because I have plenty more hammers to drop if need be.
