Staffer of the Week: Ken Maddox

Loyalty, intelligence, political know-how, ability to make things happen. These are all qualifications you look for in an elected official ,and a staffer. That is why I am proud to name Ken Maddox, a friend of mine, a former elected official, and a current staffer for BOE Member Michelle Steel (who represents SB County), to staffer of the week.
For those of you who don't know, Ken, who has his BS from Cal Poly Pomona, is a former volunteer firefighter and a Deputy Sheriff. He also spent over 8 years as a police officer in the City of Tustin. In 1996, he was elected as a councilman in the City of Garden Grove, and in 1998 as an Assemblyman from the 68th District (now represented by Assemblyman Van Tran). He joined Michelle's team as a Director of Legislative Affairs, and has been doing a wonderful job.
Ken, congrats on this and all of your other accomplishments.

Ken Maddox is also primarily responsible for two of Board Member Michelle Steel's major taxpayer victories in just her first six months of office.
First, BOE Member Steel sponsored legislation, carried by Asm. Martin Garrick, which would provide a property tax break for homeowners who install fire sprinkler systems. Thanks to Ken Maddox’s extensive experience in the Legislature, this tax cut passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee and the Assembly floor. That’s no small feat for a GOP member to pass a bill out of the Assembly, especially when it involves getting a tax cut off the suspense file.
Secondly, BOE Member Steel scored a major victory for taxpayers who file electronic tax returns. Current regulations require the BOE to assess a month's worth of interest on an e-filer who is late-- even if it were only for a day. But, traditional filers, those who file by mail, get one day of grace period. BOE Member Steel- with the help of Ken Maddox- crafted a proposal to give these e-filers a break if they are late a day. Again, it puts more money back in the pockets of taxpayers by reducing interest fees, and it encourages more taxpayers to electronically file, which saves the state millions of dollars.
Two victories for Michelle Steel. Two victories for taxpayers. Two victories largely due to Ken Maddox’s experience.
One final note: Ken Maddox will serve as the emcee of Michelle Steel and Bill Postmus’ San Bernardino County Taxpayer Rights Workshop on June 27th at the Spring Valley Lake Community Building in Victorville. Come say hello to Ken and thank him for his service.
