Farmers Branch, Texas: "Si, se puede!"

As I mentioned this weekend, Farmers Branch, Texas voted on a measure that would have prohibited landlords from renting to illegal aliens.
The anti-illegal immigration measure passed overwhelmingly with over 67% of the 6,000 votes cast. The two city council candidates who supported the ordinance also won with two-thirds of the vote.
The message however, is not in the size of the victory, but in the passion and fervor behind it. You see, turnout for this election shattered the record books. With approximately 14,000 registered voters, turnout for this election stood at 43%. The last city council election (to compare apples to apples) only saw 800 voters turnout to the polls. Turnout was 7.5 times greater than the previous election.
County-wide, turnout was only 11%.
Border enforcement and security advocates such as myself are constantly scolded and lectured about the alienation of Hispanic voters. We are told that candidates, and in particular GOP candidates, must not offend Latinos by taking a staunch stance against illegal immigration.
If you believe in the myth that Latino voters swing elections against Republicans, I have a bridge for sale. The fact of the matter is that the GOP has much more to gain by appealing to the average American who wants REAL immigration reform.
