SBCUSD: The Real Bottom Line?

Referenced below in the News Roundup is an article about the County Board of Education's approval of a new charter school, the math and science focused Norton Space and Aeronautics Academy.
We often hear studies and reports bemoaning the diminished focus on math and science education and are told of the potentially long-term disastrous impacts of neglecting to cultivate future workers with this knowledge. Noted economist John Husing often extolls the importance of the logistics sector to this region and providing an educational environment near the underutilized Norton AFB with a focus on math and science seems like a great way to not only provide a unique educational experience for our students, but also provide a quality education for college bound students and offer "real world" collaborative opportunities to those looking to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation from high school.
The San Bernardino City Unified School District is in complete and utter disarray, with only 42% of our students graduating high school. Standardized testing performance is, to be polite, mediocre.
Parents should be offered a real choice in the educational options available to their children. Thus, it wasn't a surprise to hear Deputy Superintendent Judy White's main reason for opposing this new charter school: money. The San Bernardino Sun reported:
San Bernardino City Unified School District officials have said the charter could negatively impact their district, which is funded based on enrollment. The charter could also affect the district's ability to secure public funding for facilities, Deputy Superintendent Judy White said at Monday's meeting.
Until SBCUSD administrators and board members become more concerned about the REAL bottom line, which is providing a quality education to our children, our district will continue to dwell in the abyss.
