Worth a separate post from the daily news roundup is a Riverside Press Enterprise report on President Bush's visit to San Bernardino County. The online version of the article by the PE's Duane Gang, Joe Vargo and Richard Deatly, also includes video links of the President's address at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, reactions from those in attendance, and a photo presentation of the event at the military installation, which is playing a crucial role in troop preparation.
Press Enterprise coverage from President Bush at Fort Irwin on the importance of fighting the Global War on Terror:
"It is a tough war. The American people are weary of this war," he told soldiers and their families gathered in the base gymnasium. "They wonder whether or not we can succeed. They are horrified by the suicide bombings they see."
But, the president said, setting a timetable to withdraw from Iraq would leave the nation less secure.
"The enemy that had done us harm would be emboldened," Bush said. "They would have seen the mighty United States of America retreat before the job was done, which would enable them to better recruit."
Agreeing with President Bush on the importance of winning the War on Terror is San Bernardino County Assessor Bill Postmus, who told the PE:
"These are really, really scary times and I respect that he is being a leader instead of someone being popular."
From the press coverage in area media, it appears the presidential visit to the military training center was a success that was sincerely appreciated by personnel who are preparing to serve their country in the most honorable way possible.
